What is worth choosing?
When considering a martial arts school in the New York area, Whetstone Jiu Jitsu stands out as an exceptional choice for several compelling reasons. The most significant factor is the culture that owners Dan and Erin have cultivated. It’s a "special place" with a "welcoming, inclusive school" vibe. For an "older grappler" in their 50s, the "comradery" and the different teaching styles of the instructors are particularly valued, proving that the gym caters to a diverse group of students with varying needs and backgrounds. This is a place where you will meet a "better bunch of people" and feel a true sense of belonging from day one.
Beyond the culture, the facilities and the quality of instruction are top-tier. The gym offers a large mat space, which is essential for effective training, as well as a "well equipped weight area" that includes specialized equipment like squat racks and a deadlift platform. This comprehensive setup means you can get a full-body workout and supplement your grappling without needing a separate gym membership. The availability of classes in both gi and no-gi, along with Muay Thai and MMA, ensures that there's always something new to learn and that you can tailor your training to your specific interests.
The quality of coaching is a key differentiator. The owner, Coach Dan Fazzino, is highly regarded, and the school is home to several successful black belts who are active in competition. This provides students with a unique opportunity to train with highly skilled practitioners and learn from their experience. The abundance of open mat time is another major benefit, giving students the freedom to practice and spar in a less formal setting, which is crucial for skill development.
In conclusion, Whetstone Jiu Jitsu is the ideal choice for anyone in the New York region looking for a martial arts school that offers a perfect blend of expert instruction, a wide range of training options, and a deeply supportive community. It is a place where you can find your "main sport," challenge yourself physically and mentally, and make lifelong friends along the way.

March 04 · Carter BlackI’ve trained in a few BJJ places over the last decade and visited several. Whetstone Jiu Jitsu is a special place. What makes it special are the people and the vibe. Owner Dan and his wife Erin obviously love the sport and have created a welcoming, inclusive school. I’m an older grappler (50s, ten years in, purple belt) and what I appreciate most are the comraderie and the various instructors with their different styles. The gym itself provides a large mat space, a well equipped weight area (complete with squat racks, deadlift platform, reverse hyper machine, bands, dumbbells that go over 100 pounds, etc.), clean bathroom, ample parking, and a range of classes in gi and no gi, including striking, MMA, and plenty of open mat time. I highly recommend this gym. You won’t meet a better bunch of people and you’ll be surrounded by a highly skilled set of grapplers including several black belts who are competitively successful.
May 22 · Tony MonchinskiFor almost four years, our family's been into Jiu Jitsu at Whetstone Jiu Jitsu. What started as a curiosity quickly turned into a real passion for each member of our family thanks to Dan & Erin's awesome guidance.Their support & encouragement have not only helped us improve our skills but have also created a sense of belonging within the Whetstone Jiu Jitsu community. We're really thankful for how Whetstone Jiu Jitsu has made a difference in our lives and can't wait for more years of training!
May 09 · Mariana BrophyI cannot stress enough how much I’ve gained from training at this gym. The owners have a true dedication and passion, that’s matched by their knowledge and patience with both the adults and the kids. My kids and I train, not only have we leaned so much in a few months, but the positive members/parents have been an unexpected bonus. If you want a motivated, safe, clean, supportive, and engaging gym to train at whetstone is the place to go.
May 14 · Amanda WiltseTook some drop in classes and open mat sessions. It’s a fabulous place with great coaches and competitors.
