For residents of New Jersey, finding a sports activity that is not only a great physical workout but also a discipline for the mind and spirit is a truly rewarding endeavor. In the northern part of the state, in the community of Closter, one martial arts school stands out for its deep commitment to this holistic approach: Kumdo(Kendo) Academy Sung Moo Closter. This is more than just a place to learn a skill; it is a dedicated dojo where individuals can embark on "The Way of the Sword" and discover a path to self-improvement. Unlike typical gyms or fitness centers, this academy offers a unique and engaging experience that combines rigorous physical training with profound mental and emotional benefits. The vibrant community and expert instruction make it a destination for anyone seeking a comprehensive and meaningful activity.
The quality of instruction is a key differentiator, and the reviews from students consistently highlight the exceptional leadership at Kumdo Academy Sung Moo. One student, who has practiced Kumdo for years in various locations, including in Korea, declares Master Min to be "by far the best" of all the masters who have taught him. This high praise is due to the fact that Master Min (and Master Lee) do not just teach the techniques, but "stress fundamentals of kumdo, which can easily be translated into any phases of life." The emphasis on understanding the "why" behind the movements adds a depth to the training that is invaluable. This pedagogical approach ensures that students learn not just how to execute a technique, but how to apply the underlying principles of discipline, focus, and perseverance to their daily lives.
The testimonials also speak to the positive impact the academy has on younger students. A parent expressed their happiness after enrolling their two kids, noting that their son, in a short time, has "gained self-confidence." This is a powerful testament to the supportive and encouraging environment. The instructors understand that martial arts can sometimes feel "monotonous" to children, and they address this by incorporating "fun games that enhances kumdo skills for all kids to enjoy." This balance of discipline and enjoyment is crucial for keeping young students engaged and motivated on their martial arts journey, making it a perfect activity for families in New Jersey.
The experience for adults is just as rewarding. Another long-term student, who has been attending the academy for "several years," praises Master Min for his ability to teach "more about fundamental basics of sword swings, forms and postures, technical nuances of Kendo more than any other masters" he has met. The training sessions are described as a "great mixture of lessons, drills, and sparring," which keeps the experience fresh, challenging, and "always fun." The "great friendly vibe" of the dojo ensures that people of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners, feel welcome and comfortable. This supportive community is a significant factor in a student's continued progress, as they are surrounded by peers who are all striving for the same goals.
Beyond Kumdo and Kendo, the academy offers a broader spectrum of sword martial arts. The school provides "real sword class (Iaido)" known as "SilJunDoBup," a unique and highly specialized form of training that focuses on the mentality of the practitioner. This commitment to traditional forms, passed down from the school's grand master, adds a layer of depth and authenticity that is hard to find in a modern sports activity. These classes are designed to train "one's mentality through various forms on the sword," underscoring the academy's philosophy that a strong mind is as important as a strong body. For those seeking to improve their mental focus, self-defense capabilities, and overall physical health, this comprehensive offering makes the academy an ideal choice.
The wide range of age groups at the academy, from "kids around 6 years old and up" to students and adults, creates a dynamic and inclusive environment where everyone can learn and grow. The combination of rigorous physical exercise with the mental discipline required for sword arts makes it a highly effective and engaging activity for all ages. It is "highly recommended to anyone who wants to learn about sword martial arts, train mentality, focus, self defense, physical exercise... or anyone who simply wants to do something physical and fun activity." This all-encompassing appeal solidifies Kumdo Academy Sung Moo as a top-tier destination for sports and wellness in Northern New Jersey.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have practiced kumdo off and on for a few years at different locations, including in Korea. Of all the Masters who has taught me, Master Min is by far the best. Not only does he (and Master Lee) stress fundamentals of kumdo, which can easily be translated into any phases of life, but also - and more importantly - takes time to explain why. He and Master Lee are very knowledgeable and very personable.Although my current schedule doesn't allow me to practice now, I recently enrolled my two kids and have been very happy with this decision. My son, in particular, within a short period of time, has gained self-confidence. Martial arts can be monotonous at times, especially for kids. Master Min recognizes this and incorporates fun games that enhances kumdo skills for all kids to enjoy. Thank you, SMK!
September 18 · Sw ParkI have been attending SungMoo Kumdo academy for several years. The senior instructor, master Min, is a highly skilled, great instructor. He taught more about fundamental basics of sword swings, forms and postures, technical nuances of Kendo more than any other masters that I have met over the years. His teaching methods adds a lot of depth to improving your Kendo skill. The training session is a great mixture of lessons, drills, and sparring (which is always fun). Teaching staffs are wonderful, and the dojo has a great friendly vibe making things fun for anyone to pick up and learn Kendo regardless of the level you are at. I found the training to be safe, exciting, fun, and great physical exercise. The school has vibrant age group range... starting kids around 6 years old and up, students, and adults. In addition to Kendo classes, which focuses on sparing while wearing armor, the school offers real sword class (Iaido) called "SilJunDoBup" found by the schools' grand master. The form trains one's sword swings, posture, and ultimately ; one's mentality through various forms on the sword.Highly recommended to anyone who wants to learn about sword martial arts, train mentality, focus, self defense, physical exercise... or anyone who simply wants to do something physical and fun activity.
August 04 · Hyun RimI've been going to Sung Moo Kendo Academy since 2012. Master Min is in my opinion one of the best kendo instructor in the U.S. His kendo and sword skills are second to none. Everyone is super friendly and you get to experience both kendo and real sword training in one place. Class schedule is flexible and Masters will give full attention to ensure that you can enjoy the fullest.
August 01 · Kevin ImIf you want to learn the fundamentals of Kumdo and if you want to learn the posture of body, self-confidence, and treating each other with respect, Kumdo can be a great tool for you and even for your children. Not only Master Min is a great teacher but also a great person. He is very patient and kind to students who are beginning to learn Kumdo. If you have not tried for yourself, give your chance to learn the art form of how to use sword.
January 27 · Jae Young KimWe have been attending Kumdo Academy Sung Moo since 2011 and are still going strong. We love this dojang for many reasons, and here are the top 3:3. It's a traditional martial arts studio that trains the body as well as the mind (think complete sweaty workout plus respect and discipline).2. As a parent, I got to practice this martial art together my son and daughter which resulted in great camaraderie. There is also a strong sense of community as a whole as all the students, both adults and children, attend a biannual Eastern U.S. kumdo tournament together as one team.1. Master Min, head of the dojang, is a man of "soft" charisma and many virtues. In my personal opinion he also has a gift with teaching children.
