Life is funny sometimes. God, or the Universe (depending on your point of view) gives you a gift when you least expect it. Last week I was on a work trip in NYC and staying at the 50 Bowery Hotel in Chinatown. Great place, with many eclectic amenities. One of them was a Wing Chun class.I dabbled with martial arts in college in the late 90's before MMA and BJJ were commonplace. Back then I fell in with two schools: Tae Kwon Do (common) and Jeet Kune Do or JKD (much less common). The original JKD I studied was the Innosanto blend, which was an amalgamation of different styles, from Bruce Lee's original JKD, Filipino Martial Arts, Thai Boxing, and Wing Chun (among others). I've also studied in a school that specialized in Oakland JKD and Combatives, a different school that specialized in the Blauer SPEAR system, and was in a White Collar Boxing club for five years. I even dabbled with a Wing Chun instructor where I live from Augustine Fong's lineage. In my martial journey I've done seminars with some big names in those styles and even a pro boxing trainer!I mention all of the above as context to say I've never had a training experience quite like I had on a random Thursday night on a work trip with Sifu Brian Kwang. Without trying to be corny or hyperbolic...it was damn near magical. In about a 90 minute lesson, he taught me and had me practicing concepts that exceeded 6-24 months in other schools. Seriously. Sifu Brian's Wing Chun is completely antithetical to the obsolete, finnesse oriented, fine motor skill, difficult to master versions of Wing Chun I've been exposed to over many years and different instructors. Sifu Brian teaches a hard style Wing Chun that is practical and combat effective. His teaching style is incredible. Sifu Brian is a gifted communicator and has an incredible knowledge of biomechanics, which he expertly teaches and incorporates in his style. Plus, he's a legitimately cool and laid back guy without ego... someone you want to hang out with.ANYONE can benefit from training with Sifu Brian. Whether you're a novice martial artist, someone who wants to learn how to protect themselves, or a combat sports athlete/MMA practitioner who wants to improve their striking. If you live in the NYC area or Edison, New Jersey...RUN, don't walk to train with this guy. Trust me... you won't regret it. Let me put it this way, I'm trying to figure out a way to be able to train with him on a regular basis from the Washington, DC area. Take advantage of you're close by. - Brett Bornfeld
