August 22 · Jeannette DixonThe short:Very friendly and welcoming. Great with the kids classes - kids are expected to learn, but still be kids! They challenge you to improve without pressure to advance ranks. And if they need a "time out" from a hard day at school they are given the space for that. Adults train hard - expect to sweat and leave tired! You will get out what you put in.The long:They train with many traditional aspects. Counting, forms, moves, etc are all given in Japanese and you are expected to learn the original language for the moves. There are not separate classes for low ranks and high ranks. Everyone trains together. This can be frustrating at first when you don't know what you're doing and everyone else seems so advanced. But they are patient and understand that there is a learning curve. If you stick with it, you will come to appreciate having so much experience around you while you train. Respect is given and expected. You bow in and out and refer to instructors as sensei or master depending on rank. However, it is an American dojo, which means some aspects of traditional martial arts are not followed. For example, in a traditional Okinawan dojo you would not learn any techniques from other styles. Traditional karate does not teach weapons (staff, sword, etc). Here you will learn the traditional style, but you have instructors who are also cross-trained in jujitsu, judo or mma, so you can learn some moves from other styles if you are interested. They also teach weapons for upper ranks. And some of the more nuanced aspects of Oriental honor are not followed - for example, you don't bow differently depending on a person's age or rank.Private lessons are available but not required. Many of the upper ranks have been training for decades and are experienced in numerous forms of Martial arts. Some have experience in security or law enforcement and have used the self-defense techniques that they teach - so they know what works and what doesn't, and they teach you the difference between Martial arts for competition, and martial arts for self defense.
