★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1**TL;DR: 6 stars, hands down.**Tai Chi Chuan, Kung Fu, Qi Gong -- a true gem in Wake Forest. (I've been a student for 2 years.)Frankly, GM Baird is a finely cut gem, a testament to mastery in martial arts. Now in his "more mature" years, and after moving from California, where he ran multiple schools, he has landed—of all places—in Wake Forest. This is no "trophy" school; quite the opposite. You are your own trophy. When it comes to actual self-defense, this is the real deal, tThe stuff that works.Throughout the 1980s in Burbank, CA (and later two satellite schools), GM Baird trained some 11 international and 5 world champion fighters, from venues like Long Beach International and many more. But he wasn’t just a teacher -- he trained alongside his fighters. When it comes to power generation, positioning, and technique, he teaches from the fundamentals that work (think: tai chi chuan). The kung fu style is mostly devoid of power/tension when training (the middle way).. It's relaxed, but focused. As he says: “Power doesn't go into training, it comes out of it.”At 55 myself, with black belts in Tang Soo Do, and Taekwondo, I was no longer looking for the traditional "hard" styles that are often found and take a toll on the body. I would have been content to find a half-decent Tai Chi instructor that knew *some* applications. Instead, this school popped up and I found a teacher who deeply understands the martial arts and Tai Chi at a level I could only aspire to with decades more practice.GM Baird has made himself accessible to novices, which is rare (historically) for him. He tought only black belts and masters. Really, he's a master's master. This is a rare opportunity to learn from someone at the pinnacle of martial arts, yet in a very casual atmosphere. Like anything good and worth while, what you invest in it determines what you gain from it.You’ll find traditional temple forms and a library of 74 Shaolin animal techniques that can be played in countless combinations. Defense that works. There is no "sparring", instead a phase system that encourages diversity of offensive and defensive technique (more practical). Regardless of your experience, this school provides a deep first-class education for those seeking it. Start with Tai Chi and Qi Gong, then explore the Kung Fu. Then you'll find it circles back. Check it out and train!
September 22 · Chris MorseI moved a year ago to this area and was searching around for different MA schools and teachers. I had trained aikido, kung fu, taichi and qigong before and was looking for a place that will have classes on these disciplines while spending time around friendly and experienced martial artists. Also, I was looking for a place close to my home. I am also picky with decoration and the space I will be training in. A good amount of check boxes to fill, so I was already balancing the other schools I visited cons and pros. Then I was referred to this school and met master Baird. He is very warm and humble and his other higher rank students as well. It turns out that this school marks all my checkboxes. The sifu keep the classes dynamic, we do practice kung fu for self defense but also train in a relaxed state . We are reminded of how to protect our bodies and build health while training. The taichi classes are deep and qi gong is interlaced too. We get to practice Hapkido techniques which builds upon my previous kung fu and aikido training. Another bonus is that Master Baird is a pastor. So, I get to learn about the bible after class. The building is new and I enjoy the decor and the artwork, very inspirational. Also, I love the background music is played while we train, it personally helps me with concentration. The structure of the class is open right now, I get the chance to train with black belts and experienced martial artists which is always great for a beginner! Personally, I love driving to Wake Forest downtown when going to class. To summarize I think every person looking for a place to train martial arts should come to this school and try a couple of classes, I am sure you will love it here too.
June 21 · Sandra SalemI can't recommend this school and it's instructors enough. I've been taking Tai Chi for nearly 8 months now with Grandmaster Baird. The technique, instruction and wisdom can't be matched. Best decision ever!
