February 09 · Chris FruehI have been a student at Young Forest Kung-Fu for close to 4 years now. My experience has been nothing short of amazing. I would highly recommend it for children or adults in any age group.Sifu Gary Vaganek, who runs this school, is a 6th-dan black belt who has been teaching Kung-Fu for over 30 years. He knows this art really well, and is a fantastic teacher having seen students of all skill and talent levels. He is very patient with students, a positive influence, and has the knack of knowing how to make sure students succeed and progress in their training. Note that he has been teaching Kung-Fu at Princeton University for a long time now.In addition, this school has an excellent group of young and experienced black belts, who follow Sifu Gary's culture of helping students learn the art whether it be in kata, in free sparring or in weapons. In terms of my own experience,- I am a working adult who has to manage learning this art with everything else (work, etc.)- I did not have prior martial arts experience other than taking a class here and there- This class has a sustainable schedule (2 times a week on weekday evenings with an optional class over weekends)- This class is very affordable- The peer group and school culture is a very positive influence especially on days when other things are not going so well- I have been able to get into the best shape of my life, am a lot more positive and happier overall. If you are reading this, I really hope you will give our school a shot!
April 01 · Kishore IyerI'm really excited I found this school. I just started and it's exactly what I have been looking for. Sifu Gary is a great teacher with a lot of experience and passion. The other black sashes and students are very friendly and passionate as well. This is not your average school. He has transformed a part of his home into a dojo and also has an outdoor dojo. This is his life and you can really tell. As other reviews have mentioned, he focuses on hard work and principles. If you want an authentic experience with excellent teaching, this is the place.
August 28 · Andy IsaacMy Son is training under sifu since he was 5 years old. He is 13 now. Sifu is very calm and best Guru for my kid . If you are serious and not interested in quick belts rather learn the right way.. get your kids and your enrolled with Young Forest. This review is based on family experience.
January 30 · Bhargava GortyI studied under Sifu Vaganek for five years while he was teaching at Princeton and also at his home dojo. His Kung Fu system is a very effective one, particularly because of his emphasis on precise movement. Sifu Vaganek also gives students an understanding of the tradition of Chinese martial arts and the holistic philosophy he has developed over many years of thoughtful practice and meditation. As with all good martial arts instruction, the techniques are drilled repetitively in classes in order to perfect the movement of the body, and techniques practiced with partners are learned at reduced power and speed for safety. Sifu Vaganek's system is truly martial, but is taught in a setting that promotes care and control among students. I have great respect for Sifu Vaganek and his school, and I recommend it very highly.
