★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A Black Belt is much more than knowing your forms, perfecting blocks, and executing kicks—it is the process of showing up and putting up your best effort after you had a long day and all you want is to be home, or sacrificing a fun event in order to refine your forms and kicks for test day. Becoming a Black Belt means to honestly critique yourself to push yourself in order to be a better student in the long run, and working outside of the requirements and going above and beyond to truly push to become the best version of yourself. My journey through taekwondo exemplifies this fact.Easy at first, I was excited for every taekwondo class as a white belt, and loved to watch higher belt students and instructors seem to almost effortlessly showcase their technique. But as I got to higher levels and struggled with getting down difficult kicks like the spinning whip kick and complex forms that demanded more endurance, I struggled to keep up during class and to continue my enthusiasm towards taekwondo. This experience, while demoralizing at first, allowed me to build character and to not only persevere, but to also motivate me to practice outside of classes and take on extra classes when possible to encourage my improvement. At the end of the day, to earn a Black Belt at US Taekwondo Academy means to commit to a large goal, and to work hard towards the said commitment. Though this applies to committing to extra classes in a week, time at home to practice, and polishing techniques during class even when you do not feel like it, a Black Belt is most importantly a commitment to yourself. It means to commit yourself to growing as a person by applying values taught with each belt level and each month. Above all, it means to show up to be the best version of yourself even when you do not feel like it. I am so happy to be a part of this program, and I am excited to use the skills and values I learned at USTA in my future.- Riya Sharma
April 21 · Riya SharmaOur 11 year old daughter who is on the brink of receiving her black belt at the USTA writes about her experience:"Earning my black belt at USTA is one of the proudest moments of my life. It’s not just a belt to me – it is a symbol of all the hard work, and determination I’ve put in over the years. When I first started, I didn’t know much about martial arts. I had a lot of admiration for the higher belts and the black belt students who I saw during belt promotions. But as I continued training, I realized it’s about way more than just impressive moves. At USTA, they teach us to be strong not only on the outside, but on the inside too. I had to learn discipline, respect, and how to stay focused even when things get hard. There were times I wanted to give up, especially when I couldn’t get a kick right. But my instructors, classmates, and family always encouraged me, and I kept going. The process of qualifying for my black belt was super intense. I had to demonstrate excellence in everything I learned—forms, sparring, board breaking, and self-defense. I was anxious, but I am also ready. When I finally tie that black belt around my waist, it will feel like I can accomplish anything. As part of my practice, I help younger students and try to set a good example for them. USTA has taught me that being a black belt can be the beginning of a bigger journey.I’m excited to keep learning and growing. I know there will be more challenges ahead, but now I believe in myself. That’s what earning a black belt at USTA means to me."
August 27 · Sunita SayeramEarning a black belt at USTA means so much more than just getting a belt or knowing how to do martial arts moves. It represents years of hard work, practice, and dedication. From the very first day of training, I learned that becoming a black belt is not something that happens overnight. It takes patience, effort, and the ability to keep trying even when things feel difficult. There were times when I wanted to give up, but USTA taught me to keep going and never quit. A black belt is a symbol of respect, confidence, and responsibility. It shows that I have grown not only in my skills, but also in my mindset. I have learned self-control, focus, and how to respect others inside and outside of class. At USTA, I discovered that martial arts is not just about fighting or learning techniques, but about becoming a better person and living with discipline. Earning a black belt also means being a role model. I now have the responsibility to set an example for other students, especially those who are just starting. It shows me that I have reached one big goal, but also that I have to keep improving myself. A black belt is not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a new chapter where I push myself to grow even more. It proves that hard work really pays off and that I can accomplish big things if I stay dedicated. To me, being part of USTA feels like being part of a family, where everyone helps and supports each other. I am proud of what I have achieved and thankful for the lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
August 28 · Castpie2021My journey really started around 6 years ago, before the pandemic. I used to go only as it was fun to learn about taekwondo with some friends, because, mind you, I was around 6 at the time and pretty young. I tested to a high white belt and I still remember the thrill and excitement of the testing ceremony and getting to showcase what I learned to my family. Seeing the black belt students and higher belt students doing the forms and kicks made me feel very inspired, and I wanted to do my best to better my techniques in taekwondo. Now, fast forward to 3 and a half years ago, I fully committed to my journey to black belt after pausing lessons because of covid. I still remembered my passion for taekwondo and I was pretty good at it! But, I kept going up by the belt, and the classes got harder. This is where I was challenged in my black belt commitment. Now, I've overcome many challenges like sticking to my commitment, managing my time, working out, going to classes, practicing my technique, and applying the motto for every belt in my life. Every little second has helped me grow into a stronger and more mature kid and all the instructors and Grand Master guided me to the right direction to become a better person and taekwondo student. Dedicating to black belt was easily one of the best decisions of my life. Many people drop out of taekwondo before they achieve their goal, and I luckily got to build up my character to not be one of them. Taekwondo has taught me many life lessons that I will hold close to me as I get older. As said by Lao Tzu, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."- Ryan Sharma
April 21 · Riya SharmaWhat does it mean to earn a black belt at USTA.When I started taekwondo about three and a half years ago now, I had a lot of social anxiety, At first I thought the instructors calling us out in class for what we need to fix and what we did well was meant to embarrass us, After a few months I realized it was truly meant to encourage us to do better and to help build our confidence, At first I started taekwondo Because I wanted to learn Bo Staff and other cool weapons. Still, I realized after my first month that I enjoyed taekwondo as it is, and my goal changed from just getting to learn Bo staff To Learning these skills and kicks such as the whip kick and starting just to feel more comfortable with myself. To get to black belt, you must learn its concepts and apply them in real life. Along my journey to a black belt and the journey beyond, I've learned Patience, Discipline, and Focus, amongst other things, but those three have helped me the most in my day-to-day life.Committing to this journey has been one of the best decisions of my life, I've grown so much as a person, When I started i wasn't used to the physical strain this could have in terms of pushing my body, In the years i've been here i've gained so much strength both mentally and physically and I hope to continue growing in both for as long as I can. Learning to trust myself was the first part of my journey with USTA, and getting to black belt will be the next Step in my journey. My journey may have started with learning to trust myself, and this may be the next step in my journey, but it is far from over.As a whole, this journey I'm partaking in has helped me grow so much, and I hope to continue growing along with the others at this academy for as long as I can.-Heather H.
