Tosh's Karate Academy offers a focused and high-quality set of services centered around traditional Okinawan karate. The programs are designed to cater to various age groups and skill levels, while maintaining a consistent and unified approach.
Karate Class: The core of the academy's offering, these classes provide comprehensive instruction in traditional Okinawan Shobayashi Shorin-ryu karate. The classes are structured to teach fundamental techniques, kata (forms), and practical application.
Adult and Children's Classes: The academy offers classes for all ages, including specialized programs for children, such as "KinderKarate." A unique feature is that many classes have adults and children training together, fostering a positive inter-generational learning environment.
Black Belt Class & Test: The academy provides advanced training for dedicated students on the path to earning their black belt. The black belt class and test are rigorous, ensuring that those who achieve this rank have truly earned it through hard work and skill.
Self-Defense School: Beyond the traditional sport aspect, the academy is also a self-defense school. The training is focused on realistic, practical techniques that can be applied in real-world situations, providing students with the confidence to protect themselves.
The consistent, excellent ratio of teachers to students, often with three to five black belts or higher-ranked teachers per class, ensures that every student receives personalized attention and high-quality instruction. This commitment to a low student-to-teacher ratio is a significant factor in the effectiveness of their training programs.
Tosh's Karate Academy is set apart by several key features and highlights that make it an exceptional choice for anyone in the California region.
Authentic Traditional Training: The academy's dedication to traditional Okinawan Shobayashi Shorin-ryu karate is a major highlight. Students learn a style with a long, traceable history, providing a depth of knowledge that is rare to find. Grandmaster Dan Tosh himself has over 60 years of experience, and his credentials are a testament to the quality of the instruction.
Focus on Humble Skills: The dojo's emphasis on learning and humility over tournaments and trophies is a unique and valuable feature. While tournaments are not discouraged, the core focus remains on the development of genuine skills and personal growth, rather than external validation. This philosophy attracts a serious and dedicated student base.
Affordability: According to a customer review, the academy is highly affordable, allowing entire families to train for less than the cost of just a few kids at other places. This makes high-quality martial arts training accessible to more people.
High Teacher-to-Student Ratio: The consistently high number of black belt instructors in each class ensures that students receive a great deal of personal attention and guidance. This high ratio is a significant factor in the effectiveness of the teaching and the rapid skill development of students.
All-Ages, All-Levels Classes: The practice of having all ages and belt levels train together (with the exception of KinderKarate) creates a unique dynamic. It allows senior students to act as role models and mentors, and it provides beginners with a clear view of what they can achieve.
These highlights collectively paint a picture of an academy that prioritizes tradition, community, and genuine skill over commercial appeal, making it a worthy choice for anyone seeking a true martial arts education.

Tosh's Karate Academy Reviews
Traditional Okinawan Shobayashi Shorin-ryu karate for all ages with 60+ years experience. If you're like us, when looking for a martial art for our then-7 & 8 year olds, all those accolades sound just fine but until you know, you hear the same from everyone 🤷♀️ We yhiught to ourselves, "is "traditional Okinawan Shobayashi Shorin-ryu karate" really THE BEST for my kids?" The short answer was that that was not why we chose Tosh Karate Academy, although a case could easily be made to persuade someone that...We chose Tosh for (1) affordability: all 4 of us (adults, too) can afford to train for LESS than what other places would cost just for the 2 kids!;(2) EXCELLENT ratio of teachers to students -- consistently 3-5 teachers (all black belt and higher) for each class we've been to;(3) discipline of the dojo following rules of respect and tradition with WHY always being explained for every move and every tradition;(4) all ages (except KinderKarate) and belt levels train together;(5) atmosphere is focused on learning and humility, not on tournaments and trophies (although tournaments aren't DIScouraged either, just not an emphasis);(6) experience of the Grandmaster which is also displayed along the walls of the dojo;(7) the traditional values steeped in a long, traceable history that we are now learning. If you're looking for a flashy place to show off trophies earned at tournaments, keep searching (although tournaments aren't discouraged). If you're looking for humble SKILLS, this is your place. Come give this place a try!
