Se Jun Kan Traditional Okinawan karate Introduce
For many in New Jersey seeking a new physical activity, a traditional martial arts school offers a compelling and enriching alternative to a conventional gym. In the heart of Voorhees Township, Se Jun Kan Traditional Okinawan Karate stands out as a unique and invaluable sports activity location. This is not a commercial fitness center but a dedicated martial arts dojo, a place where a rich tradition is upheld and students are empowered to reach their full potential. With a deep-rooted philosophy of balancing "hard" and "soft" techniques, the training at Sei Jun Kan is both physically rigorous and mentally engaging. Led by Sensei Joe Crespo, the dojo is a welcoming space for anyone, regardless of prior experience, who wants to improve their fitness, learn practical self-defense, and become part of a close-knit community.
The training at Sei Jun Kan is based on the traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu style of karate, a system known for its emphasis on self-defense and personal development. Goju-Ryu, which means "hard-soft style," combines powerful striking and linear movements with softer, circular techniques that include joint locks, grappling, and throws. This duality is central to the training, helping students learn to adapt to any situation. Beyond the physical techniques, the dojo instills core values such as discipline, respect, and a "no first strike" mentality. The goal is to build character, not just combat skills. Students are taught that true strength comes from mastering their mind and body and using their abilities for self-protection, not violence. This focus on ethical and personal growth is a key component that makes the dojo more than just a place to learn karate—it's a place to become a better person.
The community at Se Jun Kan is particularly noteworthy. As one reviewer stated, students "welcome newcomers with open arms." This supportive and positive group of adults and kids creates an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and encouraged to push their limits. Sensei Joe Crespo is consistently praised for his hands-on teaching style, working closely with each student to help them bring out their best potential. The training is solid and effective, ensuring that every practitioner, from a complete beginner to a seasoned martial artist from a different style, finds value and continuous improvement in their journey.

Se Jun Kan Traditional Okinawan karate Reviews
Very nice dojo and what's even better is the training. I have been training at Sei Jun Kan dojo these past few months I am happy to have found this dojo. The students welcome newcomers with open arms. Joe Crespo sensei really works well with the students and helps bring out your best potential. I have previously practiced traditional Karate in a different style (Shotokan) and I can definitely say that training at Sei Jun Kan dojo is making me a better Karate practitioner.
October 03 · Rick SajordaThis is a very positive group of Adults and Kids and has a very nice layout. Plus me and my brother have had no problems with the teachers and teaching methods. And the Sensei Joe is rough at times but is over all one of the best I've had. 😀
April 24 · George LiaschenkoI’ve always been interested in Japanese martial arts, but they were usually to far for me to go. I haven’t heard about Sei Jun Kan until recently. I contacted their Facebook page to ask a simple question: when the school in Voorhees was formed. I didn’t mean anything by it, I was just curious as to why I never heard of this IOGKF affiliated school so close to me before. The immediate response was ”Why are you asking?” I said ”I was just curious.” The person who responded to me was so unprofessional and so rude they told me to look elsewhere at the end of the conversation (see screenshots). I just wanted to ask a simple question and I was treated with such suspicion it made my stomach churn. If this is how they treat outsiders who want to ask simple questions, I am surprised they get any new students. I was going to ask them if they teach any grappling techniques, but the person who responded to me was awful, so I doubt I would get an answer to that. Very, very unprofessional.
