Raptor Academy of Martial Arts: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Submission Wrestling Introduce
For anyone in Pennsylvania seeking to improve their health and well-being, the search often leads to activities that are both physically demanding and mentally stimulating. In State College, one local institution has earned a reputation for providing a truly transformative experience through the martial arts: Raptor Academy of Martial Arts. This is not just a place to get a workout; it's a dedicated community focused on the arts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and submission wrestling. The academy has created an environment that is both challenging and supportive, a unique combination that allows students of all backgrounds and experience levels to thrive. Whether you're a long-time resident or a Penn State student looking for a new passion, Raptor Academy offers a welcoming mat.
The instructors at Raptor Academy understand that the first step is often the hardest, especially for those with no prior martial arts experience. This is why their curriculum is thoughtfully structured to build a strong foundation. A powerful testimonial from a student who started at 37 with no grappling experience highlights this perfectly. He recounts how the instructors "do a phenomenal job of explaining everything and the curriculum is thoughtfully structured to always be building on itself, for any level of experience." This commitment to a progressive and accessible learning path is what allows individuals to overcome initial apprehension and embark on a rewarding journey of personal growth. The Fundamentals Program is specifically designed for newcomers, offering a perfect entry point into the world of grappling.
The culture at Raptor Academy is another major draw. It is a community built on respect, genuine support, and a shared passion for learning. The same reviewer notes that the "incredible training partners" are as important as the instructors. Everyone is "kind and genuine and respectful with a focus on learning." This creates a safe and positive training environment where students can push their limits without fear of injury, as the academy places "a huge emphasis on being a good training partner." This community-first approach makes it an ideal place for individuals of all ages, from youth to adults, to train and grow together, fostering camaraderie and a sense of belonging that extends beyond the mats. For those who are visiting from out of town, the friendly atmosphere and clean facility make it a great place to "drop in," as another reviewer noted.
The academy's training philosophy is rooted in a blend of time-tested martial arts. They specialize in submission grappling, drawing from the principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling. This integrative approach provides students with a well-rounded and practical skill set for both self-defense and competition. The focus on technical development and open training allows for personal exploration, making the experience rewarding for both the casual practitioner and the dedicated competitor.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Started here as a chubby 37 year old with no martial arts experience or background in any form of grappling/wrestling. The instructors do a phenomenal job of explaining everything and the curriculum is thoughtfully structured to always be building on itself, for any level of experience. The fundamentals program is perfect for someone like me who walked through the door with no prior training but is equally useful for experienced grapplers who really want focus on the details. I’m now 41 years old (and still kinda chubby) but I have personally learned and progressed so much because of the amazingly thoughtful, encouraging and supportive instructors - and maybe more importantly, the incredible training partners you will share the mat with. Everyone is kind and genuine and respectful with a focus on learning. I have managed to avoid any injuries from training in large part because Raptor places a huge emphasis on being a good training partner. I can now tell everyone (and I do) that I train BJJ and they should too. Walking through the door for the first time is the hardest part and you won’t find a better environment to learn than Raptor.
January 17 · Nicholas RaiaGreat place to train. Dropped in from out of time.. friendly folks, clean mats, and hard rounds. Couldn't ask for anything different. Will definitely come back when I'm in town and would definitely recommend to others
August 22 · Brian DickI’ve been at Raptor for 8 months now and I’ve trained at other places as well - Raptor is by far my favorite place. The instructors at Raptor are very knowledgeable and attentive and the atmosphere is very fun and welcoming. Classes are held across a wide range of time slots from morning to afternoon to evening - so you can find something to fit your schedule. If you’re looking for a place to train I would highly encourage you to check out Raptor.
January 17 · josh hnathI visited Raptor last summer while I was in town for a training. Everyone was very welcoming. The instructors are great and I used a method I learned on my visit to win a match at the IBJJF Master Worlds. I can't wait to visit again!
February 24 · Rick LipaI love this gym! I started my Jiu Jitsu journey here about seven months ago, and have learned so much in such a short period of time. The instructors are friendly and deeply knowledgeable about the art. The classes are accessible yet challenging. And the members of this gym are all willing to help out newcomers as they begin their journey. From my first class on, I always felt welcomed!Raptor is also an affiliate of the Jiu Jitsu Company, an elite gym in Philadelphia. As a result, we get to attend weekend-long seminars and train at the Jiu Jitsu Company for free.I plan to continue training here as long as I'm in State College. I initially tried trial classes at all the other gyms in the area, and found that Raptor is by far the best of the bunch.
