It is a place where you are not only taught karate but are also molded into a more focused, disciplined, and resilient individual, embodying the true spirit of a martial artist.
The dedication to excellence at Pennsylvania Shotokan Karate is evident in every aspect of the training. The curriculum is challenging and requires a high level of commitment, which is a significant departure from many modern martial arts schools. As one reviewer noted, the dojo’s instructor maintains high standards, expecting students to give their "full attention and effort" with "100% focus." This strict approach, while challenging, is what ensures that students develop a strong and unshakeable foundation in karate. The path to a black belt is a testament to this philosophy, often taking seven to eight years of consistent practice and training, a much longer and more rigorous journey than at many other dojos. This extended timeline is not a barrier but a badge of honor, ensuring that a black belt from this school truly signifies mastery and deep dedication. For those who embrace this challenge, the rewards are immense, leading to a profound sense of accomplishment and a skill set that is both impactful and purposeful. The training never feels like "just a silly move," but a "move that has defined purpose," as a student who has trained for five years attests. This depth of instruction is what makes this dojo the only one many dedicated practitioners will consider.
Furthermore, the opportunity to train with USA National Team members and a head coach of Sensei Baldis’s caliber is an invaluable dimension of the training. His "unparalleled experience" and insights honed over decades provide students with a "competitive edge both on and off the mat." This environment, where excellence is the norm, pushes every student to be their best. As a five-year student shared, Sensei Baldis's motto, "You don't have to be an Olympian to train like one," really resonates, highlighting the school's commitment to instilling a champion's mindset in everyone, regardless of their aspirations. The physical benefits are immediate and undeniable; classes are so challenging that even those in good shape are "drenched in sweat after every class." Yet, the rewards go beyond the physical. The training fosters discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic that translates into all areas of life. For anyone in the Pennsylvania region looking for a martial arts experience that is truly impactful, effortful, rewarding, and challenging, this hidden gem in Pittsburgh is the ultimate destination.

April 24 · first lastI've been attending this school for the last 5 years. Sensei Baldis is an amazing instructor and he has a great team of supporting instructors. When I first started, he told me-- "You don't have to be an Olympian to train like one." and that really resonated with me. Every class is challenging and requires real effort. I'm in good shape, and I'm still drenched in sweat after every class.Sensei Baldis teaches a combination of self-defense, competition kata and kumite (sparring), and actual application. It never feels like I'm just doing a silly move, but that I'm doing a move that has defined purpose. At 5 years into my training, I'm still a couple years away from reaching my black belt (and I'm pretty well on course for where I should be). If you are looking for a martial arts dojo that's impactful, effortful, rewarding, and challenging -- PSKC is for you.
October 16 · Andrew McAdamsWhen he came to class the instructor was great. But he stopped showing up and didn't let us know. Wouldn't return phone calls and it took us over 2 months to get the auto pay stopped so we paid for nothing. I really thought it was helpful for my son so it was a huge letdown for him and me.
August 12 · Erin NortonThis is an amazing dojo. I've had some great memories here. I love the people, and it is such an amazing place.
