★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have been hesitant about posting my opinions of other dojos but this morning took the cake. I have never been more disrespected than from this dojo and it's staff (if you want to call it that). From the owner down to the help, they have done nothing but ridicule me and my family and my business, Samurai Institute. I have a feeling it's because they are jealous of our accomplishments done in just 3 short years, from TV interviews, to radio spots, to Best of Hickory Award 2 years in a row and Hickory's Business Well-Crafted award last year. But enough about our GREAT school of real martial arts, let' me say this... I went to a local hardware store today and coming out as I was going in was one of the instructors at this dojo, Chris Westbrook, and he saw me and literally stuck huis nose in the air and turn his back to me. Which to most would not mean anything, but to a martial arts instructor of 56 years I was appalled. The level of arrogance and egotism exhumed from him was unbearable. I of course ignored this and went in and purchased my item. But as I thought back over past encounters, I realized that this was from every student instructor and staff member I have met from this dojo.Let's go back to Oktoberfest 2022 in which the owner and his instructors bitched and complained to a level that we, (the Oktoberfest Committee) reluctantly allowed him to set up a table ONLY and hand out information at the festival. They then began drinking Saturday night to a level of intoxication the warranted sleeping in their vehicles in downtown Hickory, then waking up to get more beer that morning and walk through the early festivals goers and brag that it was their morning coffee. So after hurting someone doing a demonstration they were not supposed to do, they are never allowed back. As the volunteer coordinator for the festival I have many duties and one was to transport musicians back tom their vehicles from different stages. While waiting on these folks, Doug walks up, see me there on my golf cart, and TURNS HIS BACK TO ME. Thinking this was a misdirection of attention, I walked around to face him and speak and he turns back away from me. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FORM ONE INSTRUCTOR TO THE OTHER!The owner Doug Armstrong the next year is told, due to his indiscretions and behavior, they would not be allowed to come back. He then calls the mayor of Hickory and complains to him and literally BLAMES ME for him not being allowed back. Our executive director explained what happened and why he is not allowed back and that the city doesn't put on our Oktoberfest. HDDA does. This dojo has a serious alcohol problem and it has been rumored that underage drinking occurs. Not been proven yet.The truth of the matter is that this dojo is not the best place for anyone, let alone children. They blame others for their misdirection and often shows disrespect to their COMMUNITY. I have offered to help all the instructors, including these, in our area to grow as business owners and martial artist, but they all seem to think better of themselves than to associate with the likes of someone who has operated successful school in 3 countries for over the past 55 years. So be IT! Brace yourself for failure if you attend this school! Best of luck, you're going to need it.
March 30 · Pete NappierThis dojo has made my life switch entirely. I used to be sad and not healthy, but now im the happiest I could have ever hoped and being with this dojo is beyond grateful. And trust me not all dojos are perfect, and we all make mistakes even black belts. But we learn how to overcome those mistakes leave them in the past and go forward. I love these people so much and will forever will!❤️ So come on in, join MVKC today!!!!!!
May 19 · Brooklynn BlountStaff are great however these certain parents kept bothering me about where I could and could not stand. First of all they are not the owner nor the instructor to tell me what to do. My child was not even a member yet and I was going to sign my child up but these particular parents ruined it. So my child's first and last time here. So aggravating these parents are. Also they have the smallest TV screens on the planet to barely see your kid while they practice. Need to invest in a clear room so we can observe our kids better.
December 12 · CalminglyDreamyGreat martial arts school! The dojo is always clean and the staff are always helpful and in charge of the students. Master Armstrong is always welcoming and is a great instructor.
July 02 · Primal MMA Academy Carols Machado AssociationMy first tai chi class was a major success and I really enjoyed! Diane and the entire class were so very welcoming! I can’t wait to come back and make this a normal routine. I felt so good after and let stress go, it was great! The breathing with the movement and I was sore! One man in class said he has even quit taking a blood pressure medication since starting the class. I highly recommend you try this place and this class. Felt like a family!
