Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts Introduce
In the heart of Oak Park, a true gem for martial arts enthusiasts and families has been a community cornerstone for decades. Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts is more than a school; it is a "dojhang" – a sacred space for human development, as one of their own descriptions says. This is a place where authentic, traditional martial arts are taught with a profound dedication to not just physical skill, but also personal growth, discipline, and respect. For those in Oak Park, River Forest, and the wider Chicagoland area, this academy represents a rare opportunity to learn from a true master and become part of a supportive and family-like community.
The sentiment is echoed in countless reviews from satisfied students and parents. One parent of a five-year-old expressed how the classes have made their son feel "powerful, strong, and in control," providing a positive outlet for his energy. They also highlighted the school's strong focus on teaching discipline and respect, qualities that are often a primary goal for parents seeking martial arts training for their children. Another review from a college student, who has been training for over a year, described the school as a "second family." They spoke of the deep bonds formed with masters and fellow students, and the genuine warmth and respect they are greeted with upon their return after being away for months. This is a testament to the caring and inclusive atmosphere fostered by Grand Master Yu and his instructors.
What truly sets Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts apart is the authenticity and dedication of its founder, Grand Master Yu. As a reviewer eloquently put it, "This is the real deal." Grand Master Yu's lifelong commitment to martial arts is evident in every interaction. His wisdom, kindness, and patience, as noted by a student, allow him to teach to the highest ability. He doesn’t just teach kicks and punches; he teaches a way of life, shaping his students into better, more well-rounded individuals. This is a place that promises and delivers on a transformative experience, not just a series of lessons. The school is a place of profound learning, where the focus is on the "Way of Life, Justice, Peace, and Prosperity," a mission that goes far beyond a simple sport or hobby.

It makes him feel powerful, strong and in control and gives him an outlet for all his energy. As a parent, I love the focus on discipline and respect they teach the children. They let the parents stay and watch the class and you can see a class before signing up.This is the real deal-and I’m glad we stumbled upon them.Grand Master Yu is very experienced and this has been his lifelong work, not just a job for him and you can tell in the way he interacts with everybody.Definitely would recommend to anyone interested in taking Martial Arts- 10/10.
April 03 · Jesus JimenezMaster S.H. Yu Martial Arts is a fantastic place. I have been training here for over a year and love every second of it. One of the major positive things for me is how close you get. Both with your masters and fellow students. Everyone knows each other by name and it feels like a second family. Especially for me since I am a college student. After being gone for several months when I return I am greeted and welcomed back with smiles along with respect from my masters and fellow students. They have so much to offer so no mater what you are interested in you can follow your passion. The Martial Arts class itself is very enjoyable and a great sense of achievement and exercise! I also take private lessons from Grand Master Yu himself studying the art of Kumdo or the art of the sword. His wisdom and kindness along with passion and patience allows me to fully learn to the highest ability. I am so honored to be apart of this amazing place that has helped me become an even better person each and every day.
August 01 · Fangirl GenMy two young children and I have been part of the Master S.H. Yu Martial Arts family for the better part of 3 years and I can't say enough positive things about our experience. As a parent, I love their focus on community over competition as well as the opportunity to have a shared experience with my kids. They have created such a wonderful, supportive community built on love and respect, discipline, hard work and fun. The lessons learned in class often carry over and become great teaching moments at home. It is an honor to be taught by Grand Master Yu and his team of amazing instructors.
August 07 · Kate QuinnI have been taking classes here since I was 4. Learning from and training under Grand Master Yu is an unrivaled experience in depth of knowledge and technical ability. He not only understands how the body functions, and should function, but how to teach one to use their body and adjust their muscles to maximize ability. In addition the Ninja camps that my mother would take me to when I was 4-10 were always well organized, fun, and a perfect activity for children. At Master S.H. Yu Martial arts the combination of martial knowledge, and ability to engage with students at all ages and walks of life, creates a strong community and continuously constructive environment. I have been attending for 14+ years and continue to grow and enjoy with every class.
May 02 · Nainoa OhataMy husband and I have been taking classes with Grandmaster Yu for almost six months. We both have previously practiced martial arts individually and have tried many other schools. We have been really impressed with everything about the school. We signed up with the intention of coming twice a week and we find ourselves trying to come as much as possible. All the instructors are knowledgeable and patient. The curriculum is well thought out and there is great emphasis on discipline and respect. There are adult classes four times a week and they start late enough that we can easily make it after work. Grandmaster Yu is always there to help guide and encourage all his students. You really feel that he cares that you learn everything correctly and safely. I would highly recommend this school if you are a novice to martial arts or if you have done martial arts before and want to get back into it. This place is in it's own league as far as I'm concerned.
