A critical component in Kajukenbo is grappling. At Kokua, we offer a base wrestling style called freestyle. Freestyle wrestling is an international discipline and an Olympic sport, for both men and women, including youth. Freestyle wrestling has its origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling and the prime victory condition in this style involves the wrestler winning by pinning his opponent to the mat. American high school and college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. The goal of our program is to introduce wrestling to those interested in learning the sport, students who compete for or desire to compete for their middle schools or high schools, and for experienced wrestlers and grapplers looking to improve their skills.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I can’t say enough great things about Kokua Martial Arts Academy! From the moment you walk in, you can feel the passion and dedication that Sigun Esther (owner and chief instructor) brings to her students. She is not only an incredibly skilled martial artist but also a fantastic instructor who instills discipline, respect, and confidence in every student. The training here is top-notch, blending traditional techniques with a focus on personal growth. Sigun Esther has a unique ability to push students to be their best while maintaining a supportive and encouraging environment. Whether you’re a beginner or have experience, this academy is a place where you will be challenged and inspired. My son started it when he was 5, we have been happy for the last 3 and half years. If you’re looking for a martial arts school that values discipline, skill development, and a true sense of community, Kokua Martial Arts Academy is the place to be. Highly recommend!
February 25 · Lynn & ZarniMy 7-year-old son has been attending Kokua Martial Arts Studio for about two months now, and the experience has been nothing short of amazing. The promotional offer was a fantastic way to start, including a uniform, which made the transition even smoother. The staff at Kokua is absolutely incredible—patient, supportive, and truly dedicated to each child's growth. One of my biggest concerns before enrolling my son was his struggle with ADHD and defiance, which impacted both his school performance and home life. I believed martial arts could help him build self-confidence, respect, and focus—and I can confidently say that Kokua has exceeded my expectations.Since starting classes, my son has shown remarkable improvement. He is more engaged and focused at school, and I’ve noticed a positive shift in his behavior at home as well. His confidence continues to grow with each lesson, and I love how the instructors reinforce accountability, not just in the dojo but in everyday life. One unique aspect I truly appreciate is their belt stripe system—if a student receives a disciplinary action at home or school, parents have the option to remove a stripe, requiring the child to earn it back. While no child wants to see a red stripe on their belt, this method is incredibly effective in teaching responsibility and discipline. It's clear that everyone at Kokua—from the instructors to the students—genuinely cares about each child's development. I plan to keep my son enrolled for as long as possible, and I highly recommend Kokua Martial Arts Studio to any parent looking to instill confidence, discipline, and respect in their child!
February 26 · Dani SotoMy kids have been part of Kokua for 4 years now! The instructors are like family now! They really go above and beyond in teaching the kids martial arts but also life skills! They have some wonderful traditions within the dojo that we have come to love and respect so much! Especially the snatching of the belts from the parents at the belt advancing ceremony! The instructors are firm and gentle and caring and bring discipline and are truly a village in raising my children with me! I recommend Sifu Nels and Sigun Esther whole heartedly for your children’s martial arts journey!
February 25 · varsha vagadI've been taking my boys here since Aug 2024 through Feb 2025 & love how my boys have grown over this period. We go 2-3 times a week. The boys benefit from a wide range of different techniques - Karate one week, jiu jutsu another week. But aside from the high quality of martial arts instruction, I've also seen my boys develop in terms of focus & discipline due to the tough love given from the Sifu's. I also love how they have a "mat chat" every session where the Sifu's bring in some lesson about respect, trust, hard work (or whatever value they're focusing on for the week). The dojo is also a small / tight-knit community, everyone knows everyone & it's pretty evident that the students care for one another.I highly recommend Kokua if you're looking for practical/applicable self-defense with the added bonus of some tough-love discipline.
February 25 · Vincent PhamA very family-oriented martial arts studio. Kids and adults all train here. Kajukenbo martial arts is taught here, which essentially is a hybrid of several martial arts styles (karate, judo/jujitsu, kenpo karate, boxing). In addition to those, there are dedicated kickboxing/Muay Thai classes, and periodically Filipino stick fighting. Studio is big with workout mats in excellent condition. The owner and head instructor Sigung Esther Molina is fantastic at what she does - she cares for her students but still doesn't go easy on us to make sure we do things correctly and with intention. There is a 2-week free trial for those interested. It's a great workout for someone like me in their late 30s who'd rather do this 2-3x per week vs. going to the gym for exercise. Also, you do have access to the free weights and other actual gym equipment there before or after class.
