★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Traditional Japanese Karate. I am learning that the body can do amazing things. When I first watched a class at this awesome dojo, I told myself I had to be a part of it, but I am a few years shy of 70, so I was a little reluctant to start. I didn't need to be. The instructors always seem to know just the right amount to push us students...not too little and not too much. Even more amazing given the wide range in ages of students--- from teens to octogenarians. This is so much more challenging and rewarding than a mindless gym routine.
June 14 · Lyndon KayI have been a student at the Japan Karate-Do Federation for 10 years. I also have the unique perspective of having all 3 of my daughters participate at the dojo throughout their childhoods to the level of junior (child) blackbelts. This dojo is more than a place to exercise or be trained, it is a place to develop yourself as a human being and be part of a larger family. Shihan and Sensei personally train the adults and kids in the dojo, refining our skills with our form, our knowledge of kata and kumite, but also of the history of karate, from Shotokan's origins in Okinawa, to the teaching of Japanese etiquette and manners. My children and I have learned so much about ourselves and what we are capable of throughout the years of participating at this dojo. I can't recommend it enough for someone looking for the authentic Japanese martial arts experience.
June 29 · Katy HoweThis Karate class is not a good option if you have a non- athletic kid. As parents we were ok with the pace that our son was progressing. Our goal was to make him strong. After 4 months of taking my kid to this class I walked into the owner teacher cornering my son, yelling at him without our presence and telling him it might be the time to take a break! If there was anything to discuss it should have been discussed with the parents. Now my son with low self steem is even ruined more! In general they don’t have the flexibility and tolerance of working with non-athletic and not fully attentive kids.
May 21 · PaigeFor those seeking a traditional Japanese style of karate, this dojo is unparalleled in Orange County. Our chief instructor, Shihan Paul Godshaw, has been teaching not just karate, but self discipline, respect for others, leadership, and a balanced approach to life, for over 50 years now. Shotokan karate is an excellent power oriented style of self defense, and at the same time a very dynamic full body workout. Shihan instructs with wisdom, enthusiasm, and vigor, always pushing us towards improvement. He teaches body dynamics and kinesiology to maximize power, but also balances it with teaching control. Even after decades of training there, I am still excited to walk through that door. The children's program, headed by Sensei Luisa Godshaw, is truly outstanding. She emphasizes respect for parents and teachers, and cooperation with fellow students, while at the same time imparting solid karate and self defense principles to the youths. She is amazing at tailoring the program to fit our youth's shorter attention spans, and keeps the students engaged and excited.I've witnessed so many kids that maybe were struggling in school or socially, just blossom as a result of her guidance.Karate is for life, it's never too late to start training, and you never have to stop. It's a rare gift that you can enjoy your entire life.
May 11 · Marty KubickiI have been training at JKF and it is a phenomenal experience. Centered on traditional Shotokan fundamentals and principles, Shihan (Paul Godshaw) immerses you in the fighting techniques, philosophy, and history. The dojo is also a family where all members who train there are a part of a greater community bond. Excellent experience and training for all ages.
