We will explore its accessible location, the variety of martial arts disciplines offered, and the key features that define its reputation, both positive and areas for consideration. A great school, as noted in a review, is one that teaches "the old fashion way," instilling fundamental principles that go beyond the dojo. However, it’s also important to consider the needs of different students, such as adults, to determine if it is the right fit. The school's friendly community and kind staff are consistently highlighted, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
The philosophy at Houston Self Defense is deeply rooted in the traditional values of martial arts, with a strong emphasis on respect and discipline. The main curriculum is ITF Taekwondo, which forms the core of the school's teaching. In addition to Taekwondo, the school also teaches basic Judo and Aikido, offering a multi-disciplinary approach to training. This blend of styles provides students with a broad set of skills, from striking to grappling and throws, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of self-defense. The children's program, in particular, is highly praised for its effectiveness in teaching these values. Parents have noted that their children benefit immensely from the structured, old-fashioned way of teaching that prioritizes character development.
However, it is important to note that the experience may vary between different student groups. As mentioned in a customer review, while the children's program is "great," the adult classes may not be suitable for serious adult learners. The review points out that adult classes often train alongside children, which can make certain drills, especially for larger individuals, difficult. It also states that the head master primarily teaches the children's program, leaving adult classes to other trainers. Furthermore, the curriculum, while a mix of different arts, does not allow for specialization, focusing primarily on Taekwondo. The school also has a minimum three-month contract with no refunds, which is a key consideration for potential students. The review also mentions that classes can be easy-going and that a student "hardly broke a sweat," which may be a factor for those seeking a more physically rigorous workout.
Despite these points for consideration, the school maintains a positive reputation for its community. Students and parents alike describe the community as friendly, with the head master and receptionist being "very kind." This welcoming and supportive atmosphere is a significant feature, especially for children and their parents, and contributes to the overall positive experience at the school. The focus on mind training and basic sparring also adds value to the training, helping students develop not only physical but also mental toughness.

May 29 · lawrence ingleIts children’s program is great but if you’re a serious adult learner, I wouldn’t recommend this dojo. For the adult classes, you’ll be training alongside the other children so if you’re a bigger person, it may be difficult pairing you for drills. The head master only teaches the children’s program, and leaves the adult classes to other trainers. The program is a mix of different martial arts as you can see under their name, but it mostly teaches tai kwon do, and you don’t get to choose to specialize in one art over the other. The contract is 3 months minimum, I paid, didn’t like the classes, and couldn’t be refunded. I hardly broke a sweat in class as the classes are rather easy going. For one drill, we waited in two lines to practice on two punching bags. 🫤As for the good aspects of this place, there’s a friendly community, especially the children and their parents. The head master and receptionist are all very kind.
May 18 · Jimmy T Nguyen(Don’t mind my name. 💀🪦) I am an orange belt here, and I joined this place with my dad somewhere in 2019 (where as I forgot the month-), the classes are extremely excellent, almost everyone there is friendly and easy to communicate with, which is actually surprising for me as I am one to HATE socializing with people. The atmosphere is just how I like it, and this place trained me well. I take disliking into the aikido classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as I would always come home with a sore arm or leg. (Yeah. Everything physically hurts.😭), I will indeed be coming here once this place opens for adult classes, one major problem is that from where I live is an hour drive to this place. I genuinely could care less about it, but it can easily drive me insane with the wait, especially coming back home, and makes my dad and mom tired of it.I was forced to move from my last karate place in October 2019, as my parents had told me that it was expensive and money was running low. That time, I was extremely happy at that karate place, but everyone was distant and uneasy to interact with. When I moved to this place, I truly thought I’d die here, as a believed I would NEVER fit in here, and that I wasn’t even supposed to be here in the first place. Turns out the tables had turned, and that my mind was absolutely incorrect. I had enjoyed this place by the time people had started interacting with me, and that I was used to this place. It got to the point where I didn’t wanna go home when classes ended, and that I almost cried when I heard that this place would be closed because of COVID. Overall, I just hope this place will open up in summer. I miss everyone there. 🥲🤧💗
February 05 · MadzOutstanding classes and very easy to understand for beginners. The specialized classes along with the certified 2nd and 3rd Dan black belts that teach them add more variety and depth as compared to the basic training alone. From Aikido, to Judo and even Hapkido, you're certain to find one that suits you the most. After training here for 9 years (and having my family train here as well), I can firmly say that you will not regret signing up.
January 08 · ph vCame here to sign up my two kids and the sign on the door says that the office opens at 9am on Saturday and classes start on Saturday at 10am. Well I came at 9:10am on saturday June 9th, 2018 and the place is closed. Came back at 10:10 and it's still closed. I even seen a kid and his parents come to go to class, he had on his uniform. Still no one there. They knocked on the door and still nothing. They then got tired of waiting and drove off disappointed. I tried calling the number listed on the website and no answer. It went to a fax number. Then after waiting longer and longer than expected I looked up other martial arts centers and decided to go elsewhere and sign my kids up. I guess this is an example of how the business is actually ran.
