★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Going to Gracie Barra was in part to learn how to stand up against bullies, so it was disappointing that they are expected to train with one that the gym refused to discipline. We learned that even more kids were unreported victims of this particular student, with others similarly on the receiving end of racial and sexual orientation slurs, unsportsmanlike conduct and just an uncomfortable amount of looking the other way by the gym. We also learned kids were actively ganging up against the student to retaliate and make extra rough submissions against him, etc. It's truly at a point where someone may get hurt because behavior is going unchecked.Other than this, we enjoyed the community. The kids made a lot of great friends. We love the coaches, the competition team (which has experienced a lot of recent departures), and other families. While this is all very regrettable, the silver lining is that we found another local gym that has a strong community, great curriculum, and stands behinds it's policies.
August 19 · ChrisBlindeye to Bullying, Racism, and Adult Aggression toward a ChildWe trained here for two years and truly valued the relationships built here. Unfortunately, six students are now leaving for two main reasons. (Note: The gym’s policy requires members to remain for 60 days after submitting a cancellation request - an unnecessarily long period once you’ve decided to leave.)1. The curriculum follows a 16-week cycle that is overly basic and repetitive for long-term students.2. Far more troubling is the persistent bullying and racist behavior in the kids’ class, primarily from a 9-year-old student. This student’s parents are close friends of the gym owners, Ivan and Amit, and favoritism appears to outweigh the school’s stated values and publicly posted policies.Throughout our stay, this student repeatedly harassed, physically harmed, and used racial slurs against multiple children. Despite clearly lacking the necessary skills, he was awarded high-level belts and stripes. He would wail for over ten minutes if a partner accidentally hurt him, and he frequently lashed out with illegal moves, such as scratching and kicking. Parents requested that coaches avoid pairing their kids with him, yet reports were ignored, and favoritism shielded him from accountability. Several families ultimately left to protect their children. Our daughter never initiated conflict or retaliated, yet she still became a target, underscoring how the gym failed to protect even well-behaved students. Despite numerous bullying incidents targeting her from the student and his family, three stand out as particularly serious:1. Aggressive adult confrontation toward a young childIn February after a sparring session, the student’s father - a public stunt actor in his 50s - yelled at my daughter (who was only 7 at that time) because she accidentally hurt his son. She stood alone, apologizing and visibly shaken. Instead of protecting a child from inappropriate adult behavior, Ivan pressured me to shake the man’s hand “to keep the peace”, during which the father made an extremely disturbing personal threat to me referencing his military background.2. Adult-initiated social retaliation targeting a young childSoon after, the student’s mother - also a public stunt actress - began telling my daughter’s friends not to play with her and calling her a liar, apparently in retaliation for her son’s social isolation, which resulted from his own long-term misbehavior. We learned of this from my daughter’s friends, who reassured her that they did not believe the other parent, but the experience still left her hurt and humiliated. I reported the matter to Ivan, expecting the gym to intervene, yet no action was taken.3. Repeated use of a racial slurIn June, the student directed a racial slur at my daughter without provocation. She reported it immediately, yet the only response was a brief, forced apology. After extended discussion, Ivan and Amit finally promised that a repeat offense would result in expulsion, but just days later, the student used the same slur against another child (who also canceled their membership). The owners claimed the second incident “didn’t count” because it was reported after class rather than immediately. When we cited the gym’s publicly posted zero-tolerance against racism policy, Ivan and Amit dismissed it as “too harsh” and added that minority children in the U.S. would inevitably face racism - implying that we were overreacting. We valued the coaches and teammates, which is why we stayed as long as we did. But favoritism - even in the face of racism - made it clear we could no longer remain. We have since moved to a gym with a more advanced curriculum and a healthier, more respectful culture. Policies are enforced, and all students are treated equally. The difference has been night and day.If you are considering GB South Forsyth, ask hard questions about how they handle serious misconduct - and whether their stated values truly apply to everyone. Bullying, racism, and favoritism have no place in any children’s program.
August 20 · ClaireJiu Jitsu for everyone! GB South Forsyth has an incredible staff of Professors and Coaches. This is a great place to train from beginners all the way up to Worlds competitions.
June 21 · RobertWhen your daughter refers to Gracie Barra as her “second home” you know you’ve found an amazing place! The instructors are incredible! They teach to the group and the individual at the same time. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to watch her classes. They’ve welcomed me into the fold as well. This truly is a family. Thank you! For instilling a love for the sport, a newfound confidence in herself, and such a welcoming safe environment. My daughter Audrey and husband Tim love it so much!
December 07 · Amy HarperDropped in today.Very clean and everyone was very welcoming.Awesome training, thank you! - James
