Aikido Training: The school specializes in teaching what one reviewer calls "true Aikido." Aikido is a Japanese martial art that focuses on redirecting the momentum and force of an attacker rather than meeting it with force. This allows a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent. The classes emphasize joint locks, throws, and pins, promoting a harmonious and effective form of self-protection.
Eclectic Martial Arts: The style taught at Cheonjikido is an eclectic, full-range martial art with traditional roots. It draws from a variety of influences, primarily from indigenous Korean Chang Moo Kwan and Japanese Aikido. This blend provides a comprehensive curriculum that goes beyond a single discipline, incorporating elements of striking, grappling, and traditional forms (kata).
Physical Fitness: The training at Cheonjikido is a rigorous and rewarding physical fitness program. Classes are designed to improve flexibility, agility, endurance, and overall physical conditioning. Students engage in drills and exercises that challenge both the body and the mind, making it an excellent alternative to conventional gym workouts.
Self-Protection: The core mission of the school is to teach practical and effective self-protection. The techniques taught are rooted in real-world application, giving students the confidence and ability to handle confrontational situations with skill and composure.
Community and Family: The academy fosters a strong sense of community, described by students as a "family." This atmosphere provides a supportive network for students to grow and learn together, celebrating each other's successes and providing encouragement through challenges.
Authentic Instruction: A key highlight of Cheonjikido is its commitment to authentic and traditional martial arts instruction. The school prides itself on teaching "true Aikido" and an eclectic style with deep traditional roots, which can be a rare find in the modern martial arts landscape.
Emphasis on Character: The school's philosophy goes far beyond the physical aspects of martial arts. It is a place where moral virtue, responsibility, and emotional maturity are cultivated. The training is not about ego but about building a stronger character to serve and protect others.
Patient and Supportive Instructors: The instructors are celebrated for their patience and willingness to help every student. This supportive teaching style is particularly beneficial for beginners, creating an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and progressing at their own pace.
Positive Student Community: The testimonials from students highlight the strong bonds and sense of family that exist within the dojo. This positive peer group helps new students integrate quickly and provides a consistent source of motivation and encouragement.
Holistic Approach to Health: Cheonjikido offers a holistic approach to health that combines physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The training improves physical fitness while also fostering mental discipline and a sense of purpose, contributing to a healthier, happier life for its students.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve studied here for more than a decade now. Fantastic people that truly have your back. I’ve been all over the world with these people and have always felt safe. Martial arts is more than a class you take but a family that cultivates your capabilities. We don’t train to make ourselves feel better but to make sure we can take care of those around us.

January 07 · Robert BrittainGreat place to train and learn traditional Aikido that involves striking. Aikido without striking is a joke and you won't find that here. The place is a family where Biblical principles are taught and Jesus Christ is lifted up as the only true master in this life.

April 03 · Matthew BoydI have trained in this dojo for ten years. I can affirm anyone will be hard pressed to find the quality of instruction one can receive at this place amongst other dojos in today’s America, especially in Catawba County. The quality of this dojo has a great tendency to make other delusional “Instructors” jealous. Only a fool would find a problem with the level of training that can be found at Catawba Valley Martial Arts. Long live Cheonjikido!
