Capital Aikikai Introduce
For those in the Maryland region looking for a martial arts experience that is both effective and non-violent, Capital Aikikai in Silver Spring offers a unique and welcoming environment. This is not a typical competitive fighting school; it is a non-profit organization dedicated to the art of Aikido, a martial art that emphasizes blending with an attacker’s energy and resolving conflict without harm. Capital Aikikai provides a sanctuary for individuals of all ages to learn self-defense, improve their physical fitness, and cultivate a sense of inner harmony and peace. This article will provide a detailed overview of what makes this dojo a truly excellent choice for anyone in the Maryland area.
The philosophy at Capital Aikikai is what truly sets it apart. As a non-profit, the focus is on the art and the community, not on commercial gain. The instructors are passionate and dedicated to teaching, as highlighted by a "dojo dad" who has seen two of his daughters grow up with the school. They make lessons "inclusive and accessible" and, most importantly, "FUN and engaging" for the kids. The senseis, including Sensei Dave, are praised for their "comedic talents" and their amazing way with children, which ensures a positive and encouraging learning environment. The dojo’s commitment to providing a supportive space is also evident in its non-judgmental approach, allowing students to start at any time and attend as many classes as they wish. This low-pressure environment, combined with a very reasonable monthly mat fee, makes high-quality martial arts accessible to everyone.
The community at Capital Aikikai is a defining feature. It is a place where parents can sit on "comfy couches and camp chairs" to watch their kids, a small detail that speaks to the dojo’s welcoming atmosphere. The instructors, such as Sensei Dave, Tom, and Sara, are not just teachers but mentors and role models who connect with the students on a personal level. The emphasis is on building a community that feels like a family, where every member is supported on their journey. The training at Capital Aikikai is about self-improvement and mutual respect, which is reflected in the way students treat each other and how instructors interact with parents and children.
The dojo itself is described as "spacious," providing ample room for students to practice and move freely. The class sizes are balanced, being "not too big, not too small," which allows for personalized attention from instructors without being overwhelming. This physical environment, combined with the aural and social atmosphere, creates an ideal setting for learning and growth. The fact that the school has been serving the DC-Maryland-Virginia area since 1973 adds to its credibility and legacy as a respected and established institution in the martial arts community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I've been practicing here for over a year and it's been a great experience. The price is very reasonable, the instructors are great. The dojo is spacious, and the class sizes are not too big, not too small. It's also about a 9 minute from Silver Spring Metro. Check it out!
January 13 · Matt FThis place is excellent. My 7 year old daughter currently attends the kids classes, my older daughter went here for about seven years, so I've been a 'dojo dad ' for close to ten years now. The Saturday morning kids class is great, the senseis make the lessons inclusive and accessible to all the kids and they make it FUN and engaging for the kids. Comfy couches and camp chairs for all the parents to sit and watch. Quite honestly, half of us parents come for sensei Dave's comedic talents. He has an amazing way with the kids, but so do Tom and Sara. Your kids can come start anytime, attend as many weeks as you want, there's no set course, just pay a very reasonable monthly mat fee, sign a waiver and you're in. Can't recommend highly enough!
April 01 · Doug WhiteI trained at this place and decided to move onto karate and TaeKwonDo.I was impressed by the warming atmosphere from the instructors when I entered the dojo. The students welcomed me in and helped me learn techniques. The masters gave lots of attention to their students. Would definitely recommend this place to train.
August 13 · Annie Jernigan GoldbergI've been training at this dojo for more than seventeen years. I've been lucky in my aikido tourism both in the U.S. and abroad, but still think Capital Aikikai is one of the best places possible to get a solid martial arts education.
October 06 · Lucy ThomasonSuperb dojo conveniently located near Metro in Silver Spring, MD. In addition to aikido, this is one of the few places in the US where you can get deep training in Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto ryu.
