Atlanta's Traditional Okinawan Karate-do Dojo Introduce
For those living in Georgia, particularly in the Sandy Springs area, finding a truly authentic and meaningful sports activity for yourself or your children can be a rewarding quest. While countless gyms and sports centers exist, a traditional martial arts dojo offers something uniquely powerful: not just physical training, but a path to personal growth, discipline, and a deep understanding of self-development. This is the essence of Atlanta's Traditional Okinawan Karate-do Dojo, a respected institution that has served the community for decades, providing a rich and transformative experience for students of all ages.
At its core, this dojo is more than a place to learn self-defense. It is a school that upholds the philosophical and historical traditions of Okinawan Karate-do, passed down through generations. Under the guidance of Sensei Mark Moeller, students are encouraged to focus on self-improvement and cooperation rather than competition. This noncompetitive environment creates a supportive and respectful community where everyone can thrive at their own pace. It’s a stark contrast to the sport-focused martial arts schools that have become common, and it’s a major reason why so many people, from five years old to over eighty, have chosen to make this dojo their long-term training home.
The dedication of Sensei Moeller is a theme that resonates deeply with students. His long-standing commitment to sharing his knowledge and fostering a love for martial arts is evident in every class. As one student put it, Sensei Moeller "embodies what it truly means to be a martial artist," providing a practical and fundamental way for each student to achieve the same for themselves. This personalized attention, combined with a curriculum that explores both the physical and philosophical aspects of the art, ensures a comprehensive and life-altering experience. The dojo’s emphasis on "self and technique" rather than competitive victories provides a balanced approach that enriches students’ lives, building confidence and character from the inside out.
For parents, the dojo is a place where their children can learn valuable life skills in a structured and playful setting. The kids' classes are known for their high energy, but also for instilling a strong sense of respect for teammates and the learning process. Many parents have commented on the "incredible kindness" found at this dojo, a trait they didn't see at other schools. This environment allows children to build not only physical coordination but also confidence, concentration, and discipline, all while making great friends. This focus on building a positive community and teaching respect is a powerful tool for nurturing well-rounded and successful children.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm a student of Sensei Mark Moeller since 2008 at Atlanta's Traditional Okinawan Karatedo Dojo. This dojo (school) he has so generously created and the knowledge he shares with so many of his students is quite frankly priceless. I'm deeply impressed with Sensei's care of every single student that's ever trained here, whether it was for 2 months or 20 years. His love of the martial arts is readily apparent, and no matter what the challenges are, he always finds a way to spark curiosity in each student, which I find only in the greatest teachers. The kids classes are energized and playful, with a strong sense of respect for one's teammates and learning. Many parents have told me they see an incredible kindness in our dojo not found in others they've practiced at.I would say Sensei Moeller embodies what it truly means to be a martial artist. His teaching style provides a very practical and fundamental way for each student to find the ability to achieve the same for themselves.Sensei welcomes new students to try a class or two before joining. Normal workout clothes are fine. We have students that range in age from 5 years old to 81.
July 15 · S SuzanneI have been a student of Moeller Sensei since 2001and have always felt that I got the best of care, instruction, and friendship from him and the senior students who assist him in training. One of the things I have always appreciated most about Sensei and the dojo is attention to not only the physical aspects of karate training, but the philosophical and historical aspects. I don't live that close to the dojo and I am surrounded by martial arts schools. The fact that I have driven past everyone of those to train with Moeller Sensei for the past (almost) 20 years should tell you something of the appreciation I have for his knowledge and his spirit.
February 08 · Joseph CharlesThis dojo teaches lifelong martial training, not just how to win in a fight. Sensei Moeller has dedicated 35+ years of his time into making this a center of learning for anybody who wants to learn how to learn Okinawan Karate in the same traditional ways that he and his masters learned. His passion shows in the way that he instructs both his black belts and his white belts with a calm patience. The training that you learn at the dojo isn't just physical - but mental and emotional as well, and it makes lifelong decisions easier to handle, both in the dojo and outside the dojo
February 09 · Stephen SchwahnI was one of Sensei Moeller's first students in Atlanta over 30 years ago and now hold the rank of Rokudan in both Shorin Ryu and Shudokan Karate do. As part of our training I have been exposed to and studied many other arts extensively including Hungar Gung Fu, Tai Chi, Aikido, Wing Chun, Goju Ryu, Kabuto or weapons systems including the six classical Okinawan weapons and many Gung Fu weapons. Sensei's instruction provides the broadest of perspectives and martial arts knowledge of any school with emphasis on traditional philosophy and approach to training. Our training includes both hard, soft and internal emphasis. As part of a traditional approach to martial arts training, rank progression and standing are not important. Development of knowledge and demonstrable skill should be your only focus. A traditional practitioner of martial arts does not concern him or herself with these things. As is often said in eastern philosophy, "the journey is the reward". Commitment requires patience and attention to personal development. In due time, one will rise to their level of proficiency and be recognized for their skills. I have found this philosophy to be very valuable in my approach to everything in life and has helped me to find contentment in every situation and undeterred focus. Sensei Moeller is an excellent teacher and has become a great friend. My journey with the Dojo has been one of great fulfillment from the standpoint of personal development, physical training, cultural understanding, knowledge, philosophy and most of all friendship . I could not recommend Atlanta's Traditional Karate Do Dojo more highly. I have found my opportunities with the training to be limitless.
February 08 · Mark SneppI have had the priviledge of being a student of Moeller Sensei for several years. You could not ask for a more selfless individual to share what he has acquired over decades of practicing authentic martial arts. The classes are taught in a non competitive, cooperative and mutually respectful environment. The instructors give freely of their time to work with you from the basics to the more in depth meanings behind the movements. I highly recommend this school for anyone looking for traditional okinawan karate, self defense or just good work out.
