★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My wife and I highly recommend Aikido Portland. The teachers here are incredibly skillful, thoughtful, and kind. They are able to impart and instruct intricate series of movements in a relaxed yet precise and disciplined matter. When we sit in on our son's lessons, we feel like he's not only having lots of fun learning a martial art but also gaining valuable knowledge beyond the physical aspect of Aikido: such as how to be respectful of one's teachers, others, and oneself; how best to redirect challenging forces one encounters; and more. Aikido Portland is truly a wonderful gem in the neighborhood.
July 05 · Shaw PatioWe were thinking about martial arts for our 8 year old boy for awhile and decided in January to visit a few places. The teacher, David, welcomed us in even though he was in the middle of teaching a class. He said our son could join the others on the mat if he wanted. After just 5 minutes he was so interested watching the class that he decided to go and participate. He loved the first lesson so much that we never checked out another place and enrolled that evening. He has gone twice a week since then (totally free for the first month!). Sensei David is patient and kind. He encourages every student from beginners to advanced. What impresses me the most is not only the teaching itself, of techniques and movements, but the respect, self-control, and discipline the children learn: respect of themselves, other students, and their teachers. We are extremely pleased to go to such a positive place. The other adults helping the younger students are also very helpful and patient. Seeing our son gaining self-confidence and self-esteem is a good feeling.
February 10 · Jeff McAlpineMy overall thought for this dojo is "amazing". The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. David is a wonderful instructor who is supportive, kind, and patient. The kids really enjoy the classes. My two daughters love going. My oldest is 14, started a few years ago as very quiet and somewhat introverted. She now has built her confidence and self-awareness through these classes. She worked hard and made her way to the adult class. My youngest is 8, and can be a bit excitable at times. These classes have helped teach her discipline, respect, and some patience. I stand by the belief that there is something to offer everyone who attends.
January 25 · Shannon ClarkI love going to classes there!! David Sensei is patient and nice. It helped with discipline, respect, and patience. :)
June 14 · Mason StaffordDavid Scheer came to our school to teach the art of Aikido to our middle school students. He provided far more than I expected as he started the first session by laying down the foundations regarding daily routines and expectations. He taught them the history as to where and why the students shoes should be placed when entering the classroom. He taught them why Aikido is practiced barefoot and why the students should sit a particular way. His class is much more than a physical practice.David took the time at the beginning of each class to explain the history behind that days lesson. This allowed our students to understand the reasons, history, and concepts behind what they were learning.David's style of teaching and enthusiasm in what he does shows in every lesson he provides. He captures and holds the kids attention from start to finish in a way that any teacher would love to possess.I strongly recommend letting David and Aikido Portland demonstrate their professionalism and effectiveness to your student.
