This commitment to a supportive and non-intimidating atmosphere is a recurring theme in the positive feedback from students, who often express how it was the perfect place to start something new. The emphasis on community is not just a marketing slogan; it's a palpable reality where classmates genuinely support each other's journeys on and off the mats. Ahimsa Jiu Jitsu offers a focused curriculum that provides a unique blend of physical challenge and mindful practice. The school’s offerings are designed to cater to both individuals seeking an effective self-defense skill and those looking for a more contemplative form of movement. The primary services include:
- Jiu-jitsu: The core of the school's offerings. Classes focus on the "gentle art," a martial art that uses leverage and technique over strength. This includes instruction for beginners and more advanced students, with classes being engaging for all skill levels.
- Yoga: The school integrates yoga into its offerings, providing a "Yin to Yoga's Yang" approach, as described by the owner. This practice complements Jiu Jitsu by improving flexibility, breath control, and overall body awareness.
- Women's Self-Defense: While not a separate, standing program, the studio is known for its welcoming environment for women, with instructors who excel at creating a supportive space in a male-dominated sport.
- Introductory Classes: The school offers a free intro class for new students, providing a no-pressure way to try out the sport and meet the instructors. This is a crucial first step for many who are nervous about starting a new physical activity.
- Classes for all Levels: From brand new beginners to those with years of experience, the classes are designed to be simultaneously challenging and accessible, ensuring that everyone can progress at their own pace.
The intentional combination of Jiu Jitsu and yoga is a significant aspect of the school's philosophy. It recognizes that a well-rounded practice involves both strength and flexibility, and that the physical demands of one are balanced by the restorative nature of the other. This thoughtful pairing provides a holistic approach to fitness and wellness that is often absent in more specialized gyms.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Going to jiu jitsu every week was one of the highlights of my winter! I had never trained jiu jitsu before coming to Crested Butte and I was so lucky to be met with the most welcoming, supportive, and fun learning environment. Kim is so enthusiastic about what she does and she does a great job introducing the sport to beginners while simultaneously keeping class engaging for people who have trained for years. Kim also was great at creating a supportive and welcoming environment for my friend and I as women in a male dominated sport. All of our classmates were also super welcoming and fun to train with. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a better time starting something new! If you are thinking about trying jui jitsu definitely check this place out!

Her classes are fun and challenging, and keep me coming back because I so want to learn more and continue to spend time working with Kim. I can’t recommend Kim and her classes enough. If you’re a woman, and thinking about giving it a try, do it!!!
