March 04 · Kathy GudmundsonSo I’ve worked out at several Dojo’s over the years and have studied Kenpo previously. Being older (48) and not in my prime anymore I was hesitant to start my journey over again. I love the Kenpo/Jiu-Jitsu blend that Sensei Dave has put together. He has studied directly under SGM Sullivan who was one of Mr. Parker’s original students. Mr. Parker is the man who founded American Kenpo. So we are learning Kenpo only a couple of generations removed from the founder himself which I think is really cool. I find this system to be very practical for modern self defense. The depth of knowledge the instructors possess is impressive and they teach the material so that it makes sense and can easily be applied to a modern self defense situation. Plus I’m getting a good cardio workout in.Everyone has been really welcoming. I wish I hadn’t dragged my feet and had signed up years ago. Sensei Dave and Sensei’s Bill and Al are very reasonable. I haven’t felt pressured to get outside of my comfort zone. They frequently tell you to “do what you can”. There are varying levels of fitness amongst the students in the class but I always leave feeling like I got a good workout in. Everyone is working to be better than they were yesterday.I can’t say enough good things about my experience there so far. I feel like they have welcomed me with open arms. If you are on the fence about getting started don’t hesitate to come try out a class or two. You will probably wind up getting hooked like I did.
