Venango School of Kung Fu, located in Seneca, presents an opportunity to learn a martial art that is distinct and deeply rooted in a single family line. This is not a modern, mixed martial arts gym, but rather a school dedicated to passing on an authentic, pure art form known as Kune Tao. The instructor, George, is highly praised for taking "his time with his students to teach them discipline and the art." He is a dedicated teacher who recognizes that martial arts is about more than just physical moves; it's about building character and fostering a sense of capability. The curriculum is broad and inclusive, offering classes in Tai Chi for those with mobility issues, as well as specific programs like kickboxing for women. The school’s commitment to self-defense is a major theme, with a student highlighting that their training has made them "more confident that I could handle myself in a bad situation." ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I've been attending this school for around a decade. Despite what other reviewers say the art is very practical and may not be as flashy as some other mma styles, but it is a pure art: IE not pieces picked from other schools and shoved into one curriculum. It came from one family line and has been passed down as such, no mixing in other art forms. The school has been here since the 70's, and students have become The teachers passing on the art. The teacher, George, does offer different classes, such as tai chi for those with mobility or joint issues, as well as kick boxing for women and has several certificates in teaching other fitness courses. George takes his time with his students to teach them discipline and the art, whether it be boxing, tai chi or Kune Tao.In the Kung Fu classes we not only learn how to accurately throw punches and kicks, as well as more advanced techniques, but we also learn self defense moves using rubber knives and fake guns. There are also classes involving weapons such as Nunchucks, broad swords, staffs, tai chus (sais) and fans. All in all this school is affordable, fun, and very informative. As a young woman I am more confident that I could handle myself in a bad situation because of my training here. That's not something you could learn simply by watching UFC on the TV! Plus it's a great workout and definitely gets you on your feet and your heart pumping.
April 25 · Rapunzelsempai sanWhen you call to find out what they teach, the instructor doesn't hesitate to say "kuntao is a rare martial art." Aka, nobody uses it because it probably doesn't work in a real fight. They advertise kickboxing but are teaching ti chi which has nothing to do with kick boxing. I would know because I've taken kickboxing through clarion mma, whose students actually fight in real cage matches. The so called kickboxing they teach here wouldn’t be useful in an actual self defense situation. Their videos on Facebook show how uncoordinated their students kicks and punches are. Their students are taught to lean into their punches with no hip force. The kicks they teach are so awkward, I find it unbelievable they think it's actually usable. My best advice is to watch videos of professional UFC fighters and compare their punches and kicks to the videos on this companies facebook. You can see instantly that they don't know what their doing.Bottom line, if you want your kids to actually learn how to defend themselves, do not send them to this school. I recommend sending them to an actual Mixed Martial Arts school where they are given the chance to pressure test their skills. The most unfortunate thing about this school is that those attending might actually believe they are learning something useful. But I guarantee none of them would be able to defend themselves in a life threatening situation. Just watch the Facebook videos and you will see.
