★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I've had my son enrolled with Matt for more than 3 years now and I feel now is a time to leave a review.Solid.USSD Vancouver is a place of practice and Matt is an excellent guide in whom I have immense trust. Family is important and a central value here. Matt is a Marine and has the sense of discipline to drive his honor. A value most needed today. Never did I ever think that Matt had nothing less than the best interest of my children at heart.Don't sleep on this place. A great addition to our community.
May 29 · Jeff LovellReview might be a bit long, but I do want to make sure you the reader, are informed. Thank me later :)We’ve had our son here for close to a year now. The current structure for littles (less than 7 years old) is two group classes and one personal lesson with the dojo head, Master Matt.I can’t understate how phenomenal these lessons and interactions have been for our son. He had previously experienced some gross motor delays, and some range of motion mobility issues from a car accident last year. *All* of those issues are now gone. His flexibility is where it should be for his young age. His body coordination is on par, if not above, where it should be for his age. And his confidence and willingness to communicate and push himself, is indescribably different from where he started.Even for myself, I was a student for a few months as a form of exercise, and still implement the learned movements, stretches, and mindset in my personal life, and still practice some of the forms with my son outside of classes so he continues to advance in belt grade and mastery. So I say all that to say, this dojo, Master Matt and Ms. Kaci, are absolutely worth your time and consideration. They have fostered a supportive community that underpins an excellent education, and I wholeheartedly recommend them.
May 14 · Ja'Lon SissonI'm disappointed with my experience with Matt and Kacey at USSD. Multiple times there were issues with lack of organization, professionalism, and communication which were aggressively pinned on me. I supposedly failed to pay on time one month, and they seemed angry and suspicious even after I produced a receipt signed by Matt demonstrating that I had paid. The payment process was disorganized and they didn't always give me a receipt - I was lucky they did that month. They pulled me aside before class such that I missed out on class time and was ostracized in front of other students as if I had done something wrong. They had my phone number and thought there was an issue - why not just call or text me? I had been going to lessons for months at that point and they had all my info. It's like they went out of their way to create rude, disorganized confrontation. One day I was the only student to show up to class. Matt and I agreed to cancel the lesson, and I also mentioned I'd be taking off the next 2 weeks for a trip and would defer payment accordingly - we agreed on that. When I got back they acted like I hadn't communicated anything, and once again pulled me aside and made accusations before a class, claiming I hadn't paid in months when really they were so disorganized with their records and communication they didn't know what was what. I'd had enough - I said it's not OK to treat me this way, even if there is some issue to discuss. Kacey told me "then you can leave" so I left.I communicated this issue to Matt months ago and never received a response. So I haven't returned. They expect their students to call them "Master" and "Ms." but in my case they didn't practice the empathy or professionalism they preach. I would not recommend working with Matt or Kacey.Edit & response: I gave Matt ample time to respond to my communication about the issue - I didn't hear from him, which is telling. No response - not even "let's discuss in person." The experience was painful and robbed me of a pursuit I was otherwise enjoying. So I've posted about it to warn current & prospective students. I'm not "lashing out", like I said I'm simply disappointed. I have no interest in any more confrontation about this.
January 10 · Eren KalfaogluA fantastic studio with a great attitude. Master Matt is talented, knowledgeable, respectful, and fun -- awesome with kids, and an encouraging coach/mentor for adults. The studio offers a friendly atmosphere, lots of space, it's clean, and there's plenty of parking. Myself, I'm 54, and I attribute being able to move, stretch, and walk up stairs again is all thanks to Master Matt. I'd recommend his studio to anyone who wants a mindful and direct (read: no-nonsense) approach to studying the martial arts.
May 25 · Russell MicklerWe love this place! Mr. Matt is great with the kids. He is tough but fare. My boys have special needs with learning disabilities and Mr. Matt provides a safe fun place for them to learn. He only tests them for promotion when they are ready. He teaches discipline, respect and a few other things along with karate. I started studying a few years after my boys started. He has helped me achieve many goals and set new ones. Thank you master Matt for all you do for us.
