October 31 · Luis MoralesI have been a student at Torii Dojo for approximately 4 years and elsewhere for 9 years. I had checked out 3 schools in the area before choosing this location. As with any new endeavor there is a little fear, but by the end of my introductory class I knew this was the place I wanted to be. Without a doubt I have received the most complete and thorough instruction from Sensei Kohler. I really like how he presents the katas and explains and ties together the moves (bunkai). This makes the kata more memorable and applicable as opposed to just being a “dance”. Being a small and less powerful person, Sensei also offered tips that I could apply to make something work better for me. He also uses the instruction of vital points (kyusho) to influence the effectiveness of strikes and blocks. I think this idea places more emphasis on placement and technique and less about power. The usage of vital points is something I have not experienced elsewhere. I hadn’t worked with traditional weapons much either. Again the explanation of how the weapon could enhance or execute a technique made the application more real as opposed to just spinning around a bo (long wooden staff) or nunchaku. I actually enjoyed using the weapons more than I thought I would from my previous experience. If I had wanted for anything it would be a bit more ground work in case I found myself having to defend myself from that position. Instructors from Okinawa, New Jersey, North Carolina, and locally have also presented information or seminars to broaden the learning experience. Sometimes hearing the message delivered in a different way really helps the understanding. Another interesting aspect of instruction was the history of martial arts and how it was handed down from Sensei to Sensei as well as the country of origin or influence. This is the best deal on the planet as far as my martial arts experience!
