★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We have been attending The Way of the Shadow Martial Arts Academy now for a full year and I cannot express how good of a decision it was to enroll our son there. From my very first telephone conversation with Sensei Hong, I knew that this was going to be a very positive experience for our child and that he was going to love it here. The approach all of the Sensei's take with each and every student is one that I wish more parents can experience first hand as I have found it to be an excellent example which we can all use to teach children with. I try to mimic their approach at home when I am coaching my own children and when I am coaching my tball team as well. The Sensei's are patient and speak directly to each child when they are teaching and never are afraid to take extra time with a student to ensure that no child is left behind. They know that each student is at a different level and age, so they have grouped the classes by age range to ensure that the students are taught at an appropriate level. One of the most impressive things I noticed right away was the amount of volunteers students they have who are of a higher position/rank who are student helpers that spend additional time at the Dojo and help teach the students during classes. My son is in the age group of 4-6 and there are never fewer than two instructors teaching and most of the time there are 3 teaching the same class. This helps to control the class, spend time with a student who might be struggling with a lesson and who can demonstrate the proper technique when needed. They take time to learn each child's name quickly and never miss a chance to highlight their positive attributes while helping them grow with each lesson, the respect they pay each child is paid back in kind ten fold and student's are always given a chance to shine, building their confidence as they go.It is easy to see how much the students, no matter their age, love and respect these teachers who are giving them tools they can use throughout their lives, not just in the realm of self defense, but also in self discipline, honor, integrity, love for community, and respect for authority beyond what they learn in their homes. As a parent who is trying to instill the appreciation of these values in my children as part of their core, The Way of the Shadow Martial Arts Academy is an additional leg of the table we are basing this foundation on. In line with our parenting and our beliefs, we couldn't have found a better place to help provide the values we hold dear.We are fortunate and blessed for the friendships we have made here and hope that others will take the time to stop by and speak with one of the instructors or parents who are sharing in this experience and see for themselves what these people are doing here to help grow a better group of people for our tomorrow.
August 19 · Jeremy SlossWe've been bringing our son here since August of 2008. Not only is our son developing martial arts skills, he's also made a nice group of friends. We visited 3 other places and were set to join one of them, when we discovered The Way of the Shadow. The way our son was introduced to the classes was the key for us joining. Our son received a private lesson to learn the ropes and then was led to class by one of the instructors. The other places left it up to the kids to join the class on their own.The owners, Tafan and Shasta, as well as the instructors are extremely nice and very personable. The style of training is designed for practicality and every day use. In Spring of 2011, three of the teenage boy students were able to use their skills to fight off five muggers at Del Amo Mall and helped the police arrest the muggers. The muggers were 17-19 years old, while the three students were 14-16. All five of the muggers were prosecuted. Also, one of the adult students is a police officer. They teach self-defense, punches and kicks and grappling. Training on many types of weapons is available including swords, escrima and ninja stars. The training is primarily ninjutsu, but Soke Tafan is very knowledgeable about many styles of martial arts.To promote a sense of family, the dojo usually has an event each month. Some of the events include broomball, a weekend in the mountains, an annual Christmas party, picnics and overnight sleepovers for the kids. One of the sleepovers is Valentine's weekend, a nice plus for the parents. We've been very happy with The Way of the Shadow and never thought about taking our son anywhere else since we joined.
March 20 · Robert RussellI love Way Of The Shadow. Great staff and instructors, they all are like one big happy family. They are great at teaching , my daughter has learned a lot. I recommend going here.
October 24 · Melissa GuirlTired of watching my 12 year old play way too many video games, I decided he needed an outsude activity. I had driven past the “Way of the Shadow” Martial Arts Academy several times. The offer of a free week made it easy, and no stress to come and give it a try. After the free week, my son said ‘I want to do this”. Great learning envirioment , awesome instructors and practicial martial art training. After many years of training, my son recently recieved his black belt. Training and experiences that will last a lifetime, thanks
July 16 · Dave WatersFirst Google review here! This place is perfect. I have been coming here for years and the instructors have been nothing but kind to me, helping me out with form, technique, and just about anything else when I needed it. They are really great at showing how to flow from one position to the next. It is all about the economy of motion and using the enemies tools against them.Another thing is that the Sensei has taken traditional techniques and modernized them for more practical use. In a normal class, you won't be learning how to use a katana or a shuirken (Although we do go over those on a rare occasion). What you will learn instead would be how to fight using modern weapons. How to counter a small concealed knife, how to quickly disarm a gun from an enemies grasp. Things you would need in a urban brawl.Overall, this is one of the more practical styles of martial arts I have seen, and the Instructors do an excellent job of teaching it in a way you would understand.
