The Renshinkan - Modern and Traditional Japanese Martial Arts: Aikido and Jodo in Tempe, Arizona Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For those in Arizona seeking to explore the deep traditions of Japanese martial arts, The Renshinkan in Tempe offers a unique and authentic experience. This dojo, which operates with a traditional, non-commercial ethos, specializes in Jiyushin-ryu Aikibudo and Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo. Unlike many modern martial arts schools that focus on competition and sport, The Renshinkan is dedicated to the development of mind, body, and spirit, a concept known as ki-ken-tai-itchi. Their approach is rooted in the mastery of formal techniques and immersive drills, with an emphasis on effectiveness and safety, rather than on winning tournaments or scoring points. This creates a very different kind of training environment—one that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
The Renshinkan is a dojo with a rich heritage and a community-driven spirit. Students who have trained for decades praise the consistent quality of the instruction and the depth of knowledge held by the senior teachers. The instructors are described as professional, highly skilled, and excellent at communicating what they know. The focus on practical technique is a significant highlight for experienced martial artists who appreciate the legitimacy and integrity of the training. This is a place where you can learn a martial art as it was intended—as a method of self-defense and personal development, rather than a sport. The overall atmosphere is one of joyful practice, filled with respect and mutual support, making it an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome to come and train. While the training can be serious, it is balanced with a sense of community and a shared journey of self-improvement.
This academy is not a business just trying to make money; it is a dedicated community of students and teachers who are passionate about their art. They do not participate in competitions or tournaments, allowing them to focus entirely on the core principles of their respective disciplines. The side-benefits of training here are numerous and include improved discipline, self-confidence, stress management, and the development of a calm and centered mind. The Renshinkan is a perfect destination for anyone in the Arizona region who is looking for an authentic martial arts experience that is grounded in tradition and dedicated to the holistic well-being of its students.

learning
★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have over 40 years of training and experience in a variety of martial arts and hold advanced or master instructor ranks in four of them. I have visited The Renshinkan on a few occasions and found the instructors to be professional, very skilled, and excellent at communicating what they know.
August 02 · Mike CastoI trained at Renshinkan (formerly Jiyushinkan) for almost ten years in the 2000s. I'm still a member of Jiyushinkai and every time I'm in Arizona I stop by the Renshinkan to get some good training in. I've trained at various Judo dojos and other martial arts in the past decade, but nothing compares to the Jiyushinkai. Two aspects of the training that I particular appreciate are the focus on effective technique rather than learning how to score points in a competition, and the safety of their training. Renshinkan in particular is lucky to have some very senior teachers who have been training in Jiyushinkai for decades.
July 31 · Robert NealMy advice to anyone seriously interested in learning Aikido, get with this group. They are extremely knowledgeable, skillfully, and caring people. I cannot give them enough praise for their patience when training, and for their genuine concern with my "getting it". I love this wonderful art. They are the reason why.
August 05 · Steven BonettI visited some years ago and had a wonderful experience! Great training, very nice, welcoming people. I highly recommend checking out this dojo if you have an interest in martial arts.
August 17 · Lisa TomoleoniAn amazing dojo to learn principles that may take you a lifetime to perfect but will most definitely humble you and change your journey.
