This is a martial arts school that truly stands out for its commitment to making the benefits of Taekwondo accessible to everyone. The classes are held in various Portland community centers, creating a welcoming and convenient environment for families across the city. It’s a place where physical conditioning and self-defense skills are taught hand-in-hand with crucial life lessons like discipline, respect, and hard work.
The driving force behind this school is the instructor, Mr. Loeffler, who is consistently praised by students and parents alike for his exceptional teaching style. He is described as "extremely patient" while still maintaining discipline in the classroom, a difficult balance that he manages with a "very positive attitude." His ability to connect with students of all ages is a "true gift," as he keeps a smile on his face even after a full day of classes. He treats everyone with respect, making the training environment a supportive and encouraging place for both children and adults. As one parent noted, their family felt "lucky to have him be a part of our community," highlighting the deep and positive impact he has on his students' lives.
One of the most appealing aspects of Taekwondo - White Tiger Martial Arts is its remarkable affordability and flexibility. The pricing is described as "perfect for our budget at $35 for ten 1-hour lessons," a rate that has not changed in years, a rarity in today’s world. The school's flexibility is also a huge benefit for busy families. If you miss a class, you can easily make it up at one of the other community center locations where the classes are held, such as Mt. Scott, Montavilla, or East Portland. This "drop-in" model allows students to fit their training into their schedules without stress or penalty.
The program is designed to be beneficial for everyone, regardless of their age or previous experience. It offers a great workout for adults who have found it to be a "perfect exercise routine" and "a lot more fun than going to the gym." For children, the classes are a fantastic way to get them away from video games, helping them develop discipline, self-confidence, and social skills in a fun and active setting. The school also offers free practice sessions in local parks, led by senior black belt students, which further builds a strong sense of community and mentorship. The ability for a student to earn a black belt in as little as three years, while still allowing others to go at a "slower pace," demonstrates the personalized approach to training that is a hallmark of this school.
Beyond the excellent instruction and flexible schedule, the financial commitment is made even more manageable by the fact that belts are free and monthly testing is also free. This approach removes the typical financial barriers that can often deter families from participating in martial arts. The focus is on the student's progress and personal growth, not on generating revenue from fees. This shows a genuine care for the students and the community, a value that is consistently praised in reviews.
Taekwondo - White Tiger Martial Arts is conveniently located at 740 SE 106th Ave, within the East Portland Community Center, as well as other community centers across the city. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a great martial arts class. The instructor is extremely patient while, at the same time, maintains discipline in the classroom. The prices for the classes and uniforms are great, belts are free, and students can make up a missed class by coming into one of his other classes. There also a free practice session in local parks on Thursdays & (I think) Saturdays hosted by some of the black belt students.
October 01 · JoeThese classes are held at Portland community centers in southeast and are wonderful for all ages. Our daughter started going about 7 years ago, and my wife and I were inspired and joined up a year later. Mr. Loeffler is excellent with children and treats everyone with respect. He has a very positive attitude and instills discipline and hard work while still managing to keep a smile on his face after a full day of classes. He has a true gift, and I feel lucky to have him be a part of our community. The prices are perfect for our budget at $35 for ten 1-hour lessons, and the prices haven't risen in the 7 years we've been going. The classes are also very flexible, which is great if something unexpected comes up at the last minute. If you miss a class you can make it up on any of the other days it's offered at the other southeast locations. If we can't make the Tuesday night class at Mt. Scott, we can simply show up on a different day at the Montevilla or East Portland community centers and take the class then. There's free testing once a month, and Mr. Loeffler helps everyone make the progress they are after. Some people practice a lot and go to classes multiple times a week, and those people can be a Green Belt after one year and a Black Belt after three years. Most people go at a slower pace, and it's totally up to the individual. It's a great experience for kids, and gets them away from video games for a little while. As an adult, my wife and I have found it to be the perfect exercise routine, and a lot more fun than going to the gym. I couldn't recommend it more!
March 14 · Ahren SimsMy oldest daughter started taking lessons with Mr Loeffler when she was four. She's now six and we have passed our beginning class and now take the intermediate classes together. My wife and I look forward to all three of our daughters learning Taekwondo here, as the prices are unbelievable and the instruction is top notch. I've always been impressed by Mr Loeffler's patience and care for his youngest students, and that care has continued into the intermediate class. Highly recommended.
