★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have trained in many places around the world and this dojo is the best for me and my family. Its mixture of traditional martial arts and modern combative concepts really set it apart from the rest. The mentorship of Kyoshi Baker and the guidance of his trainers are second to none. The fact that this place is not the typical cookie cutter Martial Arts school, that saturates many cities today, really gives credibility to the Shuhari style. You have to work hard and earn your promotion. The patience, the structure and knowledge that this place provides its' students, helps to build a strong foundation that goes beyond the walls of this dojo. The skills and attributes attained from this school will greatly benefit all students who are lucky enough to train here. It is a valuable experience that everyone should have access to. This is why I chose to train here. This is why my entire family trains here. This is also why, you should join our family!
March 16 · Niko GlobalWhen I initially checked out this dojo, I honestly had no intention of actually training here due to the commute from where I was living at the time. However, a few minutes into my first class at Shuhari, I felt right at home as I was kindly welcomed by literally everyone. I signed up right away, and haven’t looked back! This school is solid and tight-knit. Training includes both traditional martial arts as well as practical self-defense, so students are incredibly well-rounded. Kyoshi Baker is a skilled and dedicated instructor who genuinely loves what he does and challenges each of his students to become better individuals (no matter what age or skill level). The skills and wisdom gained from Kyoshi and the other instructors here have been so very valuable. I cannot recommend this dojo enough!
September 19 · Lindsay TemproMy daughter (age 7) and I had the great fortune of finding this dojo just over a year ago and decided to give it a try. It's been the best decision we've made since moving to Sarasota! Both of us attend training here several times a week, so I spend Mon-Fri at the dojo, either attending class myself, or watching my kiddo train in the children's class. I gotta say, this is one of my favorite places to be! Not only have my kid and I found something we both enjoy doing and can both bond over outside of training hours, we've found our tribe and a place where we belong. The instructors and students are extraordinary individuals, and I truly wished I possessed the ability to fully describe how amazing they all are.Kyoshi Baker is beyond words; his patience, desire to teach, and the care he shows each of his students is remarkable. He's formed a family that extends past the walls of the dojo, and has completely changed so many lives for the better. To see how much my kid has grown in both confidence and as as a person since she joined the dojo is indescribable, and I can't wait to see how far she'll go as she continues her tutelage under Kyoshi Baker and the magnificent instructors at this dojo.As for the technical, non-mushy side of the review: the kids' class is fantastic, but the adult class is AMAZING!! In addition to Shuri Ryu Karate, we get to train Ju-Jutsu, techniques from various types of martial arts and weapons! It's so much fun and pushes you out of your comfort zone in the best possible way. Plus, the fitness side of it all is a major bonus!
September 09 · AtenasOur daughter came here last June, as she was getting bullied at school and we wanted her to come to an environment to strengthen her inner and mental self, as well as her physical self. She was like a little puppy at 10 years old, so happy to be part of something. After 6 plus months of classes and trying her best, my daughter no longer attends. While other students were given belt promotions who started after her, our daughter was left behind. I had a discussion with the owner Mark to explain that our daughter was feeling defeated, (Remind you we came here to help boost her esteem) and he explained that she had to be able to do a certain number of kicks and the work, on top of 10 guy push-ups. The other girls in the class who were promoted could not do the push-ups, I was there to witness it with my own eyes. He also wanted a commitment from us, and since we were cash paying customers, I paid in full for 6 months ahead of time. $600.00 cash in his hand. 2 months after I did this, our daughter no longer attends. He kept the $400.00 dollars that was overage, and kept the aspirations of our daughter crushed in his pocket with the $400.00. He did not provide the same commitment back to us that we gave to him. It's sad that when a child comes looking for help, they get treated poorly and passed over, when all he had to do was promote her once and keep her confidence up, I feel he either didn't take the time to understand the gravity of the situation; as he has other instructors teach the classes all the time, he was too naive, or since he was already paid, didn't care. Either way, it was done at the expense of our daughter's emotions. The other children in the class were not friendly and welcoming either, nor did they promote an inclusive environment for our daughter. I think there was some biased toward us and our family, and we still do not know why. I would choose another place to take your child.
March 14 · AlexThis is a great martial arts school with an exceptional chief instructor. He works with each student patiently regardless of his/her physical skill level, and provides a safe & positive environment every class. All students get to learn both traditional martial arts and practical self-defense skills. I recommend this school to anyone - stop by & check it out!
