★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1High quality, traditional martial arts instruction. The teachers have real world experience such as the military and police department. This school will teach you how to defend yourself in situations that may require it, rather than teaching to win trophies for fun. The instructors and regular students are kind, helpful, and welcoming, and the dojo is very clean.
September 16 · christina gSeishinkan dojo is a rare find. It is a traditional martial arts school that teaches SIX different arts (including weapons classes). Students are encouraged to consistently improve their physical fitness along with proper body mechanics while learning the different skills in each art. High quality instruction is given by teachers with REAL world experience. They are patient and highly skilled with decades of training to share with their students. Both teachers and students are helpful and welcoming. It is a great place to train….I’ve been training here for 2 decades…started with tai chi classes and now study all the different arts. They make the hard work fun. I highly recommend this school…for the young along with the not so young.
September 18 · Concerned CitizenSeishinkan dojo is an exceptional community gem. I have trained here for more than a decade and give it my highest recommendation. The instructors are experienced, encouraging and enthusiastic--they go out of their way to explain self defense techniques and answer questions. I think it is especially important for women to learn self-defense. When I first began classes here I had no martial arts background but I was made to feel completely comfortable--which of course, makes learning much easier and fun. There is an overall vibe of discipline, hard work and camaraderie conveyed by the head of the dojo, James Waller, and all of the teachers that they impart to students. Seishinkan East dojo is a great place to learn martial arts.
September 16 · LauraI am not aware of any other location that teaches 6-7 different martial arts. One does not need to partake in learning all of them but with just one or two you will receive quality instruction. You will not see flashy acrobatic martial art movies techniques. The focus is on practical self defense not tournament sparring. This dojo is still under the tutelage of Sensei Michael Calandra who moved to Arizona some time ago. Sensei Calandra's departure from the NYC location has not resulted in any degradation in the quality of instruction. The current owner Sensei James Waller has proven himself to be well worthy of taking up the reigns of transmission of Martial arts knowledge. I am a longtime student of Sensei Calandra but I have experienced no dismisment in standards and expectations required of me in order to improve my skills. Skills development if clearly focused upon. Body mechanics are stressed quite often. Through hard work and adherence to these and other principals I have seen a marked improvement in my practice. Anyone who joins and applies themselves in a similar manner will experience similar results.
September 17 · Ramon SantiagoThe instructors are excellent. Hi quality instruction given by teachers with incredible experiences. Just take a look at the head instructor's Bio. They not only teach you how to defend yourself physically, but also how to defend yourself against lifes every day's stresses and how to defeat it. Believe it or not, it is the same set of skills. When you need to defend yourself you can count on the training that you have received from this school without any hesitation.
