Martial arts school, Aikido school ★5.0

159 Western Ave W Suite 280, Seattle, WA 98119, USA

5.0
My son has been doing Aikido here for about 2.5 years. The Dojo is run by Malory Graham. We were drawn to the fact that a woman is the Sensei at the Dojo.Initially our motivation was to get a PE Waiver in school. Aikido is different from other martial arts, in that it encourages using the opponent's negative energy against them. This seems particularly resonant in times such as the ones we are living in. It is as much a practice of the body as it is practice of the mind. In fact, I would offer it is mind and body coming together. Before joining the Dojo, my son would question his physical abilities. A sign of his confidence in his ability is manifest in that he no longer questions his ability and in fact uses his Aikido training and approach in other aspects of his life. Seattle Aikikai, is not just a Dojo where one learns the practice of Aikido, but a community. We are grateful to have found it! - Sanjay Kapoor

Seattle Aikikai - Uptown: A Unique Path to Mind-Body Harmony

In the heart of Seattle, Washington, lies a martial arts school that offers a unique and resonant approach to self-defense and personal development. Seattle Aikikai - Uptown is not just a place to learn physical techniques; it’s a community-led dojo dedicated to fostering personal mastery through the practice of Aikido. This modern Japanese martial art emphasizes peaceful conflict resolution, blending with an opponent's energy to redirect it rather than meeting force with force. This philosophy is particularly compelling in today's world, and it serves as a powerful tool for students of all ages. The dojo is a community, a place where people come together to support each other's growth, and it is a space where every practitioner, from the beginner to the advanced, can find a path to confidence and self-awareness.

A key aspect that draws many to Seattle Aikikai - Uptown is its leadership. The dojo is proudly women-owned and operated by Sensei Malory Graham, whose presence and instruction are a significant source of inspiration. Her teaching style is praised for being excellent and accessible, helping students new to martial arts to pick up material quickly. For families, the school offers a transformative experience. One parent, whose son has been practicing for over two years, noted how Aikido has not only improved his physical abilities but has also built his confidence, a skill he now applies to other aspects of his life. The supportive environment ensures that classes are not too crowded and that everyone feels welcome and patient with one another, making it a great place for anyone, regardless of their experience level.

  • Aikido Classes: The core of the dojo’s offerings, these classes teach the art of Aikido, emphasizing peaceful conflict resolution, mind-body harmony, and non-aggressive self-defense. • Adult and Kids Classes: The academy provides a range of programs for both adults and children. The kids' classes take a fun, game-oriented approach to teaching, helping children acquire important life skills, physical fitness, and coordination. • Beginner’s Programs: Recognizing the nervousness many feel when starting a new martial art, Seattle Aikikai - Uptown offers a very attractive beginner's package. This includes the opportunity to sit in on a class and receive one-on-one practice with instructors and other students, ensuring a smooth and confident start.
