Petaluma Academy Martial Arts Introduce
For residents of California looking for more than just a place to exercise, Petaluma Academy Martial Arts (PAMA) offers a rich and fulfilling journey into the martial way. Since its founding in 1979, this institution has been a cornerstone of the Petaluma community, evolving from a simple exercise studio into a comprehensive martial arts school. It stands apart not only for its wide range of disciplines—from the hard-hitting power of Kenpo Karate to the gentle flow of Tai Chi—but also for its deep-rooted commitment to teaching character, integrity, and discipline. This is a place where every student, regardless of age or skill level, is given the personal attention and guidance needed to succeed.
The school is led by a "true Grand Master," as one long-time student fondly described, a testament to the high level of expertise and dedication of the head instructor. This emphasis on quality instruction ensures that students are not just learning moves, but are truly living the martial way. This commitment is evident in the school’s no-nonsense approach to training, where advancement is earned through hard work and merit, not simply paid for. This philosophy creates an environment of mutual respect and achievement that inspires students to push their boundaries and strive for excellence. The sense of community is also a huge highlight, with students of all backgrounds coming together to learn and grow in a supportive and often joyful environment.
The positive atmosphere is a recurring theme in reviews, with one Tai Chi student mentioning that the "people involved, from teacher(s) to folks like me, make it enjoyable with much laughter." This balance of seriousness and light-hearted camaraderie is a unique feature of PAMA. It proves that the path of martial arts does not have to be solemn; it can be a source of strength, balance, and joy, particularly as an alternative for those whose bodies are no longer suited for more rigorous forms of training. PAMA's ability to cater to a diverse clientele, from children to adults and seniors, makes it a valuable resource for the entire community. It is a place where you can find physical benefits like strength and balance, as well as the mental and emotional clarity that come from dedicated practice.
Over the years, PAMA has adapted and grown, incorporating new disciplines like Tai Chi and Latosa Escrima into its core curriculum. This evolution reflects a desire to offer a truly holistic martial arts education, one that combines the hard, external styles with the soft, internal ones. This fusion of techniques helps students develop both physical prowess and a sense of inner peace. The school's history and enduring presence in the Petaluma community since the late 1970s speak volumes about its reliability and the positive impact it has had on countless lives. It’s a place where tradition meets modern needs, providing timeless lessons in a contemporary setting.

tai chi
★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My Sensei since 1979-80 I think. A TRUE GRAND MASTER. He cares. He lives the martial way. No pay and get a black belt here. Skilled....smart...and truly a PEACEFUL WARRIOR. Forever Grateful
July 27 · T.T. SternIt’s been about 4 years since I began the tai chi program here. Although I took karate 30+ years ago, this is no longer an option for these old joints. So tai chi has been a wonderful alternative with strength and balance as well as the martial arts aspects to it. I enjoy the workouts but the people involved, from teacher(s) to folks like me, make it enjoyable with much laughter. I highly recommend PAMA!
March 25 · Kristen HughesI’ve been practicing Tai Chi at PAMA for just over four years now and it’s helped me greatly in a number of areas. I’m a bit older, so I wanted to explore the health aspects of Tai Chi. Plus, I was looking to gain more ability to focus my mind and also have more peace in my life. After four years I’ve see improvements in all these areas, especially with my health. I had worked for over 34 years in landscaping/gardening and had a pretty messed up back. I’ve found that Tai Chi has helped with the soreness I’ve had in my back for years, and has also helped me to stand-up straighter. The head teacher of Tai Chi at PAMA has also, for all these years, been teaching it as a self-defense system. He’s very experienced in being able to do this, unlike most teachers who teach it in this area. I think this is a very cool added benefit to taking Tai Chi at PAMA.
January 21 · Carl CareyWhether you want real martial arts training or fitness training, this is a great place to be. Jake Patterson is an incredible teacher with an amazing amount of knowledge and skill. The entire team is AWESOME!!
September 01 · Doris DentGreat school for learning self-confidence, discipline & self-defense for children and adults. I am proud to be associated with PAMA, 29 years as a student, and 20 years as an instructor.
