★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I wanted to share some feedback regarding Master Park’s teaching approach at the Portsmouth Taekwondo school. While I recognize that discipline is an important aspect of martial arts, I feel that requiring children to say “sir” repeatedly—especially during the last part of class—can feel excessive and overly formal for a children’s program. The atmosphere sometimes comes across as more rigid and militaristic than supportive and educational. In my experience with Taekwondo in Korea, instruction is typically balanced with respect, encouragement, and an engaging environment. Unfortunately, my children have expressed boredom and frustration due to the repetitive class routines and limited variety. It seems the same material is taught without much adjustment in pace or depth, and feedback is minimal. During poomsae practice, even higher-belt students seem to struggle with memorization, possibly because instruction is too fast-paced and corrections are not clearly provided.Additionally, the classroom environment feels overly strict, and students don’t appear to feel comfortable asking questions or expressing themselves. This lack of open communication may limit their learning and enjoyment. From a financial standpoint, I’ve also noticed that the costs associated with the program—uniforms, testing fees, and equipment—are significantly higher than those in similar programs in Korea. When combined with the concerns mentioned above, this has led to a disappointing experience overall. For these reasons, I’ve decided to withdraw my children from the program. I hope this feedback is received in the spirit intended—as constructive input—and that it may support the school’s growth into a more engaging, student-centered environment.
