National Karate Introduce
For families and individuals in the Sartell and greater Minnesota region, finding a health and wellness activity that offers both physical benefits and mental fortitude can be a challenge. National Karate in Sartell provides a unique and valuable solution. This is not merely a gym; it is a long-standing martial arts school with a mission to help students of all ages discover the benefits of dedicated training. For decades, National Karate has been a trusted institution, providing a structured, engaging, and supportive environment where individuals can improve their fitness, learn practical self-defense, and, most importantly, develop the discipline, focus, and confidence that are essential for success in all areas of life.
The value of martial arts is perhaps best articulated by those who have seen its effects firsthand. A long-time patron of National Karate in Sartell shared how a pediatrician recommended karate classes for their child, emphasizing that the "fitness, focus, discipline, and attention skills that could be gained through karate classes were invaluable." This medical perspective underscores the profound, scientifically-backed benefits of such training. The patron also recalled the doctor's belief that a high percentage of his patients who earned black belts went on to "make other great achievements later in life," highlighting the long-term, positive impact on a child's character and future.
For parents, the self-defense aspect is often a primary draw, but as another review points out, the benefits are more nuanced and far-reaching. The parent expressed initial worry about bullying and a child's inability to defend themselves. They discovered that National Karate teaches a form of self-defense that extends beyond physical strikes, promoting "self-confidence" and "non-violent conflict resolution." This holistic approach ensures that children are equipped to handle challenging situations both physically and emotionally, fostering a sense of capability that lasts a lifetime. The same parent confidently stated that their children are now "more confident adults" capable of defending themselves, a powerful endorsement of the school's impact.
National Karate also fosters a strong sense of community, with students and their families coming together for fun and supportive events. The mention of the annual picnic at Warner Lake shows that the school is dedicated to building relationships outside of the dojo. This creates a caring and fun-filled environment where students and their families feel like part of a larger community, which is just as important as the training itself. The sense of belonging and camaraderie makes the journey toward a black belt much more enjoyable and rewarding.

While National Karate offers an impressive array of services and benefits, it is important for prospective families to understand all aspects of a long-term commitment. A one-star review highlights a significant issue with the business's administrative and billing practices, specifically regarding contract termination. The review expresses frustration over a "rigid, confusing" contract with unclear cancellation terms, including a lengthy 50-month agreement and a fee of over $600 for early termination unless specific conditions like relocation are met. This experience stands in stark contrast to the promotional values of clarity and fairness. While the instructors and classes were praised, this review serves as a cautionary tale for families to "read your contract carefully, and don’t be afraid to ask questions." It is a reminder that while the on-the-mat experience may be positive, the administrative side of a business is equally important.
What is worth choosing about National Karate is the profound and lasting impact it has had on the lives of its students. The endorsement from a pediatrician and the testimony from a parent about their children's increased confidence and ability to handle conflict are powerful indicators of the school's success in shaping young people. The wide variety of programs, from self-defense to Krav Maga and Jeet Kune Do, ensures that students can find a discipline that aligns with their goals. The community events create a supportive and fun environment that extends beyond the classroom. The school is clearly a place of quality instruction and positive mentorship. However, a prospective student or family should be fully aware of the contractual obligations before signing up to ensure that the business's administrative policies align with their family's needs and values.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My children attended National Karate for many years. The benefits that they received from classes, mentors, and fellow students will last a lifetime. When one of my children was young, their pediatrician recommended karate classes. He said the fitness, focus, discipline, and attention skills that could be gained through karate classes were invaluable. He believed that over his 30 years in practice better than 80% of his patients that earned black belts went on make other great achievements later in life.I was attracted to the self-defense aspect of training at National Karate. I worried about bullying in school and about peers belittling my children. Children are not always capable of defending themselves either physically or verbally. I learned that karate helped with self-defense, both through promoting self-confidence and through teaching non-violent conflict resolution. I believe that my children are more confident adults, and that they are capable of defending themselves today.I was fortunate enough to attend the St. Cloud, Sartell, and Albertville National Karate picnic at Warner Lake last year. The school is hosting another event this year at Warner Lake on July 12. There is a potluck picnic at noon, classes in the park at 11a.m. and then students can spend the afternoon at the beach. I am looking forward to a fun filled event this year. National Karate students are lucky to be in such a caring and fun-filled environment.
July 10 · Alison BellThis is the first 1-star review I’ve ever written, and the first time I’ve filed a complaint with the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office! But I feel strongly that other families deserve transparency before signing a contract here. When we enrolled at National Karate in 2022, we were led to believe that if we ever needed to cancel, we could simply pay “the difference” between the discounted monthly rate and a standard class fee. It was presented as a flexible agreement, and cancellation seemed like it would be easy if our situation changed. That was not the case. There is no language in the contract supporting this, and when we formally submitted a termination notice after 29 months of consistent payments (over $2,900), we were told we still owed the remainder of the 50-month agreement, a $606 fee or had to prove relocation through utility bills, none of which was clearly disclosed when we signed. The instructors were kind, and our children enjoyed the classes when they attended. But the administrative and billing side of this business feels rigid, confusing, and out of alignment with the values they promote. I don’t want friends, neighbors, or other parents to feel blindsided or stuck like we did.Read your contract carefully, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A family-focused organization should treat families with fairness and clarity, not legal loopholes.
June 01 · Mandi MoonClasses and instruction are good. HOWEVER, the contracts that they push are sketchy and designed to trap you. Good luck if you ever want to cancel.
May 28 · Ben AndersonVery happy overall with National Karate! Nice variety of class schedules and instruction.
June 23 · Jake KeeganBoth my boys go here. Great place. People are second to none. Highly recommended.
