I am 12 years old and am a second degree Black Belt and have been going to Master Kang’s For 9 years and have had an amazing experience. Master Kang teaches from ages 3 all the way to full grown adults. I also recently started working as an instructor. I should have written this review and long time ago. I have seen other reviews saying he humiliates kids so much they make them cry, That is very much not true but he will call you out for being disrespectful and if it is very bad and he might take away your belt as punishment. Taekwondo is an art of discipline and Master Kang will not accept disrespectful behavior. He will not get mad at you for not being able to do something but he will get a little mad if you do not put an effort towards learning. I also take sparring class where students get full body gear and they are engaged in contact sparring. This helps students build strength and bravery. Going to Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a fun and engaging sport and it something I look forward to throughout my week. Students also have a chance to learn nunchucks after reaching a certain belt and I find it very fun. Over all I love doing Taekwondo and it is something anyone can do if they put there mind to it

@jenny, I'm looking for a new dojo to train and happen to read your review. As a parent of 3 I understand the initial thinking but you are wrong. Your job was to teach your child respect above all, specially to a sensei who is trying to teach a valuable lesson that you did not implement properly at home. Just because she is getting good grades, it does mean she understands the meaning of respect. USA schools are soft due laws & rules that are only making the new generation softer and softer, if you don't believe me ask Mr Depression, USA favorite excuse for not finding true purpose and coming up with excuses. What you did will have life long repercussions and you will spend the rest of your life blaming the universe when something does not goes her way. I don't know the sensei or the dojo, I don't know how it exactly happen, but what I do know is this, bad situations in a control environment are the perfect situations to practice real life scenarios. Emotions are like a muscle that need to be trained and master. That's what martial arts is about, it's not about kicking and punching. If you don't want your child to get cut by a knife, dont teach them how to cook. Calluses are your friend not your enemy. Maybe it's time to get her a cell phone and call it a day. I was so excited to send my kid here. The kids look like they’re having a great time. That evaporated in less than two hours of class- that was the time it took for master Kang to humiliate my daughter, who is seven years old, in front of everyone, making her cry, shaming her and taking her new belt away. What did my daughter do? After following all of the previous exercises in the class with full effort, master kang said that my daughter rolled her eyes at one of his instructions. He said that was very disrespectful and to “drop the attitude and act like you’re having fun!”; my daughter, who does excellent in school, started crying; this was when M Kang said he was doing this to “help” her. This hurt to watch. The whole room of compassionate parents and other kids CRINGED.I felt like I should have taken her out right then, but I wanted to defer to his authority, and to the fact that I agree it is disrespectful to roll your eyes, if that’s what she did. I didn’t see it happen.What made me resolve to leave the dojo was the fact that after he caused her to cry and humiliated and shamed her, she was so emotionally flooded, it was impossible for her to concentrate on what was coming next. Instead of telling her to sit down for a while he made her continue in the class to performLike she was having fun (through tears) and she, being seven years old and brand new, was not able to fully execute the next set of brand new routines, flawlessly. That is when he chose to berate her AGAIN for “not paying attention! “and guilted her for letting down her partner. So he piled on the situation that HE created by making her cry, THEN shaming her for not being able to instantly recover from one of the most embarrassing and painful situations she has had in a school setting ever. That is ABUSIVE.I should have known something was wrong when the previous class, like another comment or pointed out, he hits kids on the head. After that first class I asked her if she liked the class: And she responded that she didn’t like being hit on the head. We don’t hit our kids at home . She was uncomfortable going back but I forced it. That discomfort, which I overrode by bringing her back, probably produced the reluctance and whatever eye rolling that made her a target in the second class.After the shaming incident, at the end of class 2, my daughter and I were brought into M Kangs principal’s office and further scolded and lectured about disrespect. He said that he will tell you when you’re doing bad things and that’s why his students are good. She was inconsolable at that point and it was truly awful to sit through.Unlike my husband, who is very angry, I chose to believe that K is actually acting out of a place of concern for kids when he’s being mean and showing tough love. Unfortunately for us it has made it impossible for us to ever go back there. My daughter absolutely does not want to do that class, or martial arts again, and I don’t fully blame her. It could’ve been handled in a kind way and it wasn’t. Hope it was worth it: Master K just lost thousands of dollars because he decided to keep it real on class two with a new kid and shame them. Gives you an indication of what kind of place this is. Not for the softies. If your kid Might not enjoy being humiliateand in front of everyone, stay away. Such a shame, we really were so excited. Heartbroken and having to do damage control with my kid who had nightmares last night. Beware.Thanks master kang!

Best place for taekwondo. Master Kang teaches directly from young to old and is highly decorated in the arts of Taekwondo.You’re not getting students teaching like other places. You’re getting training and discipline from a direct Master in Taekwondo who teaches the exact forms as if you are in Korea which is the country of origin of Taekwondo.Master Kang has spend his life training and his father was Master also from Korea.I have been to many martial arts places in NJ and this is the best.Also, if the kids do not listen he give 3-4 warnings to kid which quite a lot … Some parents can’t handle that but doesn’t realize that training is part discipline…
