From the youngest preschooler to the seasoned adult, every person who steps onto the mat at KarateBuilt is on a journey to build confidence, focus, and a strong sense of self.
KarateBuilt Grand Rapids offers a comprehensive approach to martial arts training, blending traditional techniques with modern, real-world applications. They teach a variety of disciplines, including ATA Karate, Taekwondo, and Jiu-jitsu, providing a well-rounded and dynamic curriculum. But the true value of their program lies in the "built" part of their name—the focus on building character. The instructors, including the owners Mr. and Mrs. Flees, are dedicated to teaching life skills that extend far beyond the dojo. As one parent noted in a review, their son has "learned self confidence and focus and hard work," which is a testament to the school's commitment to holistic development.
The community at KarateBuilt Grand Rapids is what truly makes it special. It's a place where families can train together, and where instructors are more like mentors than teachers. The patience and care demonstrated by the staff, from Mr. and Mrs. Flees to Mr. Myers and Mr. Trevor Flees, create an environment where students feel supported and encouraged. A customer review highlighted this beautifully, saying, "I can see that the owners and instructors really care about the children that they teach. Mrs. Flees is always so loving, fun and patient." This personal touch ensures that every student, regardless of their starting point, feels valued and motivated to succeed.
For parents in West Michigan, the security and safety of their children is paramount. KarateBuilt Grand Rapids addresses this concern with specialized programs like "Kids 'N Power Anti Abduction" and "Kids'N Power Bully Prevention." These courses are not only about physical self-defense but also about equipping children with the confidence and situational awareness to navigate challenging social situations. By teaching them to stand up for themselves and others in a respectful and non-violent way, the school is helping to build a more resilient and compassionate generation. This commitment to community safety is a core part of their mission.
The benefits for adults and teens are just as significant. Whether you're looking for a challenging cardio workout, a way to relieve stress, or a serious form of self-defense training, KarateBuilt has a program for you. Their classes are designed to improve physical fitness, increase mental focus, and empower individuals with the skills they need to feel safe and confident. The flexible class schedules and the option for both online and onsite services make it easier for busy professionals and students to fit training into their lives. The welcoming and supportive atmosphere means that no matter your age or fitness level, you will find a place to thrive at KarateBuilt Grand Rapids.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My son has been attending Karate Built for 4 years. I could not be happier with his progress, the instructors, and the program. He has learned self confidence and focus and hard work. This place is a phenomenal place to learn about one's self and grow. We are deeply grateful for Mr and Mrs Flees and their dedication to their students and curriculum.
July 18 · Amy HMy children was offered trial classes at KarateBuilt when we met Mrs. Flees at a block neighborhood party. KarateBuilt is locally owned and a family business. I can see that the owners and instructors really care about the children that they teach. Mrs. Flees is always so loving, fun and patient. Mr. Flees always kept us in loop with communication and student performance/progress. Mr. Myers and Mr. Trevor Flees who sometimes teach the classes, are well loved by my children as well cause they are very friendly and patient, they will demonstrate the skills and moves and not rushed in the teaching process. I would highly recommend KarateBuilt to other families, it’s a great place to learn!
August 13 · F MaKarateBuilt is a well-established, locally owned and operated family business. I attended this facility for several years before being side-lined for an injury. It doesn’t matter whether you’re disabled, clumsy as an ox, or a seasoned athlete, there are classes for all levels and ages (perfect for small children). These instructors make learning Martial Arts enjoyable, challenging and leaving you wanting more. Since opening at their current, new location, they have created a well-maintained, clean, and healthy training facility. Still unsure? Take the step forward and talk to Master Flees… you will be glad you did!I highly recommend exploring what KarateBuilt has to offer.
August 06 · Old Glory GlassWe first started KarateBuilt Grand Rapids when my son three complimentary classes at the Ada Halloween event. He was tentative at first, but Mr. Flees did a great job of getting him engaged. He enjoyed it so much that his sister wanted to see what it was all about. Ultimately, we saw value in the experience, skills, and knowledge gained from our children’s enrollment in the programs at Karate Built Grand Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Flees are excellent instructors that provide the students with candid feedback so they can improve their skills. Their confidence and self-esteem have grown throughout their martial arts journey. We are thankful that we decided to enroll them in the Leadership Program in addition to the Master Class. The skills they are learning in Leadership class will serve them throughout their lives. Our experience has been nothing but positive and we have recommended joining the school to our friends!
July 01 · Andrew RenerOur son started here about 6 months ago and has had a great experience. The instructors are very patient and understanding. They pay individual attention to every students needs. Would highly recommend!
