Hilliard Taekwondo Academy Introduce
For families and individuals in the Hilliard, Ohio, area, finding a martial arts school that offers more than just physical training can be a significant goal. Hilliard Taekwondo Academy provides a comprehensive approach to martial arts education, focusing on building character, discipline, and self-confidence alongside physical skills. This is a place where students of all ages, from toddlers to adults, can embark on a journey of personal growth and development. The academy's commitment to instilling positive character traits is evident in its structured programs and the values it promotes, making it a valuable asset to the local community.
The academy, led by owner Miss Thompson, is known for its highly structured program. This environment, while sometimes described as strict, is designed to teach crucial life lessons like focus, respect, and perseverance. As one parent noted, "My son listens better at HTA than he ever does anywhere else!" This reflects the academy's success in creating a disciplined atmosphere where students are encouraged to be their best selves. The emphasis on consistent effort and the straightforward belt advancement system ensures that hard work is directly rewarded, providing clear goals for students to strive for and a sense of accomplishment with each new level they reach.
Hilliard Taekwondo Academy offers a wide array of programs tailored to different age groups and needs. For the youngest martial artists, the "Little Ninjas" program is designed to teach the basics of martial arts in a fun and engaging way, helping them develop essential motor skills and learn to follow directions. For older children and teenagers, the curriculum focuses on more advanced techniques and self-defense, while also offering important training in areas like bully prevention and "stranger danger." The academy believes in teaching not only how to defend oneself but also how to avoid conflict and navigate social situations with confidence.
Adults also have a place at Hilliard Taekwondo Academy, with programs for teens and adults that cater to various fitness levels and goals. Whether you are looking for a new way to stay active, learn practical self-defense techniques, or simply find a positive outlet for stress, the adult programs are designed to be challenging and rewarding. The curriculum includes everything from the basics of martial arts to advanced techniques and specialized weapons classes. For women, the academy offers dedicated self-defense classes, providing a safe and supportive environment to learn essential skills. The training offers a full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, all while building mental resilience and focus.
The presence of senior-level students assisting with teaching is a key feature of the academy. This provides valuable leadership opportunities for more experienced students and can offer different teaching styles and perspectives, which, as one reviewer pointed out, can vary and enhance the overall learning experience. This approach fosters a sense of community and mentorship, as older students guide and inspire the next generation of martial artists. The school's focus on tournaments and competition for higher-level students is another aspect, demonstrating a commitment to supporting those with competitive goals, while not making it a requirement for all students until they reach a certain level.
While the school is highly structured and professional, some customer experiences show that the personal relationships can be complex. One customer expressed disappointment regarding a specific administrative issue with a black belt certificate, which is an important consideration for potential members. However, many other reviews highlight positive experiences with instructors and the community, praising the academy for its ability to teach discipline and for providing a positive environment for children. The fact that the school offers online classes is an excellent modern convenience, providing flexibility for students who may not be able to attend in-person sessions at all times.
In summary, Hilliard Taekwondo Academy is a solid choice for martial arts training in the Ohio region, offering a well-rounded program for all ages. It stands out for its emphasis on discipline and character, providing a structured environment that helps students succeed both on and off the mat. The variety of classes and programs, from "Little Ninjas" to women's self-defense, ensures there is something for everyone, making it a valuable resource for the Hilliard community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1My son earned his black belt at Hilliard Taekwondo Academy and decided to step away to play lacrosse, but unfortunately, he never received his final certificate—the one that marked his achievement of becoming a black belt. I reached out to Miss Thompson, the owner, to request a reprint along with some end of year documents, but she refused. It was disappointing to see our journey end on that note, especially after feeling like part of this community. We had even planned on returning after lacrosse season, but this experience changed my mind.Despite this, Taekwondo itself was a fantastic activity for teaching discipline and providing activity outside of electronics. Miss Thompson runs a very structured program and her strictness can come across as short at times. The belt advancement is straightforward: if your child attends classes, earns their stripes, and puts in effort, they generally progress to the next level. When it gets close to tournament time, it’s kinda chaotic. The focus shifts to the kids going to tournament. Tournaments are not mandatory until you’re a certain level, and a lot of focus goes towards supporting these students. Many senior-level students assist in teaching. Most of them do a great job, but like with any group of people, experiences can vary depending on who is leading the class. Overall, it’s a solid program, but our personal experience was marred by the handling of the certificate situation.
February 12 · Amanda SMy son has been going here for about a year (he was 3 when he started) and it's been nothing but positive. Ms. Thompson and the instructors all got to know him quickly and are great with all the kids while being sure to let them know when they aren't paying attention of following directions.Toddlers learn to work together and control their bodies (and voices) during class while burning off energy and having fun. Each week's class is different but always ends with the kids helping clean up the room before getting high fives and a ribbon added to their belt. My son listens better at HTA than he ever does anywhere else!
September 21 · Clint DavisBest Taekwondo in town! My son has been going here since March 2020. It has been so great for him!! He’s almost 9. They do class and offer extras like dodgeball, tournaments, and skills days. I’ve noticed improved focus and confidence. I feel good knowing my son knows how to defend himself. The Teachers and owner are amazing!! ❤️
December 13 · AmandaEdited (12-8-2022): As an update, I decided to try something different in our classes for ages 3-5. Instead of giving a few warnings and then sending a student home if they continued to misbehave or were disrespectful/rude, we've added a blue timeout mat.We review the rules at the beginning of class and even our 3 year old students will answer that the blue mat is for time out, that timeout is 20 seconds, if they argue about timeout another 20 seconds is added, that we are not bad if we sit in timeout but just need a quiet moment. We do not give any warnings, but if a student is being unsafe or ignoring instructions, we simply ask them to go sit on the blue mat, they go, an instructor uses a timer, and then they return to class. The change has been amazing. In the several weeks we've been using the blue timeout mat, misbehaviors haven't escalated and we haven't needed to send any students home during class. Not giving warnings before a time out keeps other students from joining in the behavior, students are still having fun and more great learning is happening. We don't like bad reviews, but sometimes they help you make a change to change the perception of what's happening in class. End of edit/update 12-8-2022.Our previous response to a negative review about sending repeatedly misbehaving students home:Yes, we sometimes send a student home (if a quick chat and then a short timeout didn't work), even a 3-year-old, but not for simply not standing still and not simply for chewing on their uniform -- because after all 3-year-olds do 3-year-old things -- but because of repeated defiant behavior within a class or over multiple classes; for example repeatedly making faces (sometimes that arms crossed, stubborn "you can't make me face") at an instructor when we are trying to explain a behavior isn't safe.We are, after all a martial arts school and teaching respectful behavior and following directions (in a motivating & positive environment) is what we do. It helps you at home, and helps when they go to school. We suggest you check us out for yourself.
December 07 · Ms. ThompsonI cannot say enough good things about Miss Thompson and her team of instructors. Not only has she continued to empower my son to be the best version of himself and continue to have confidence in his abilities but she really wants to partner alongside her parents if there are any behavioral concerns at home. My son looks forward to Taekwondo every week. He loves that he gets to interact with multiple different instructors who have such a passion for their craft. My son never really loved "team sports" but with HTA we found the perfect mix of preparing with a team but performing and being judged on your own. So grateful to what HTA has done for our family. I am a taekwondo mom for life.
