For residents of North Dakota looking for a unique and practical way to improve their physical health, confidence, and self-awareness, the world of martial arts offers a compelling path. Today, we're focusing on a local institution in Bismarck that has been quietly making a profound impact on its students' lives for decades: Gentle Ways Judo. This martial arts school, dedicated to the art of Judo, is more than just a place to learn throws and holds. It's a place where students learn essential life skills, including how to protect themselves not just from an attacker, but from the everyday risks of falling. The lessons taught here are so fundamental that they can truly be life-saving, as evidenced by the powerful testimonials from former students.
Judo, which translates to "the gentle way," is a Japanese martial art and Olympic sport that focuses on using an opponent's momentum and weight against them, rather than relying on brute force. It emphasizes throws, takedowns, and grappling techniques. At Gentle Ways Judo, the philosophy behind the art is at the forefront of the instruction. The focus is on balance, control, and respect. This approach makes it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels, from children learning the basics to adults seeking a new form of exercise and discipline. It's a martial art that builds strength, agility, and mental clarity.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Judo, and a key highlight of the training at Gentle Ways Judo, is the focus on ukemi, or the art of falling safely. While many people think of martial arts in terms of combat, the most immediate and practical benefits often come from this specific skill. In a review from a former student, they shared a truly impactful story about how the lessons learned over 30 years ago saved their life multiple times, not by fighting, but "by knowing how to land when I fell." This powerful endorsement speaks volumes about the value of the instruction at Gentle Ways Judo and its long-lasting, real-world applications. It’s a skill that can prevent serious injury from unexpected slips on ice, tumbles down stairs, or other accidents common in our daily lives.
Gentle Ways Judo has a deep-rooted history in the region, with its lineage extending to well-known instructors like Sensei Vern. The connection to places like NDSU (North Dakota State University) highlights the long-standing tradition of martial arts excellence in the state. This rich history provides students with the confidence that they are learning from experienced and dedicated instructors who are part of a time-honored tradition. It's a community where students become part of a legacy of learning and self-improvement.

Gentle Ways Judo Reviews
I was a Judo student of Sensei Vern and Gentle Ways in Fargo back in the mid to late 1980's while I was at NDSU. The lessons learned over 30 years ago, have saved my life at least a half a dozen times. Not by being able fight off an attacker but by knowing how to land when I fell.

December 03 · paul AndersonI am a total girl I wanted to get back into martial arts after being out of it for like 8 years! the instructor was absolutely nice, patient and very professional never laughing at me or getting agitated. I've had bad instructors before / one that just doesn't like dealing with a newbie female and let me say that is not the case here. from white belts green belts and black belts they welcome it all! breaking down a move for me is never a problem nor a hassle nor am i ever given more than i can handle.I also am a bit on the littler side and while my past with martial arts that are more like taekwondo/ karate where there's a lot of punching and kicking, is good, i find throwing someone with their own momentum to be so much more effective! I've actually broken my hand before in prior martial arts classes and with judo it's just so smooth with pens and throws and maneuvering that i never have to worry!oh god and the work out! screw the gym this class is 100x more workout than I've ever had at any gym! you can't help but build muscle and it's totally fun! it meets mon and thur nights and is always welcoming to new people contact one of the instructors for more details YOU FOR SURE WON'T REGRET IT! i know i can never wait till the next class this is totally something every girl should know especially in nd!
