★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I really recommend this. Charlie is not a special needs teacher, but an amazing athletic karate sensei. He is so fast, he moves so quick, he is like lightning. This guy taught me for 15 years and has taught me lessons inside and outside of karate. He has changed my life. He so fast.
August 04 · KenniAmazing institution and very knowledgeable instructors. All the teachers/instructors/ masters are very friendly and cooperative. Well equipped institution and welcoming environment. I highly recommend this institution.
January 25 · UmmeRaikoken owner, Charles, his sister Sharon, and the broader team of Raikoken instructors are an amazing group of teachers and leaders in the community. You can feel the intention and care they've built within this brightly-lit, well equipped studio. They generously volunteered to host a Self-Defense workshop for the young adult program that I lead, and it was a life-changing experience for everyone who participated. You can tell they genuinely feel passion and dedication towards exposing the community to the practice of martial arts in an environment that feels welcoming, safe, and inclusive for people of all identities. I truly recommend Raikoken to anyone and everyone!
February 11 · K GJoining GKA has helped my son so much. Physically, mentally. Both at home and at school. My son’s confidence grows with every lesson, and I see that he likes it. He practices basics and Kata at home on his own. He just turned 8. Our family feels very fortunate.
February 01 · Andrew UrlacherMy children all took classes from Charlie and Andrew and liked them. My youngest was around 5-7 and kept on with lessons. But he has special needs and his behavioral challenges became more difficult. The honest thing would have been for Charlie to say that he did not have the skills to teach my son and we should not continue. Instead, Charlie decided that my son was not neuro-divergent, but just needed "discipline." He used harsher and harsher discipline until the day that he humiliated my son by yelling at him in front of a dojo full of children and parents and assigning him 2000 push ups. He could barely count to 100 at the time. This is inappropriate teaching practices for any child. After my son did his best to comply and I tried not to interfere because I was afraid he would get kicked out, Charlie told me my son was not welcome back. I tried to engage Charlie in discussions so he could understand my son's disability. He would not believe it and compared my son to himself as a child. Charlie does not have autism as far as I know.I see that many children have great benefits from studying here. So, I want parents to know going in that, unless Charlie has done a lot of learning, there are important things he doesn't understand about child develop, best teaching practices, and special needs. And, if he hasn't changed, he may do ham to your child that lasts. Over five years later, my son still brings up the hurt and anger from his experience there.Andrew continued to work with my son in private lessons. He was understanding of the needs of my child and had a different perspective than Charlie. He respected Charlie AND he cared a lot about my child and saw that he could benefit from continuing. We are very grateful for that.
