★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The teachers here are superb on many levels. They have committed their lives to this system, rather than hopping from one to another. One of the reasons this is possible is because Eagle Claw Kung Fu is an enormous system. You can spend years training under just one aspect (forms, sparring, weapons, etc.), and still feel like there's more to explore. The quality of teaching here is reflected in the student body as well. Many are friendly and supportive, and most of the students here have several years of martial experience which makes you feel like you are in a safe training environment. If you are new, you can always ask a question and someone will be happy to share what they know, or get the teacher's attention for you.The school is at a great location with adequate parking, a great training floor (firm, but soft enough to absorb your foot-falls) and a clean environment. Hours are great too, as the school is open six days a week.Mental and physical exercise, as well as a skill all in one.
March 23 · Addison TaylorThis is absolutely one of the best Kung Fu schools you can go to. Both Tav and Benson Lee are extremely dedicated to the Eagle Claw style and exceptionally patient and kind instructors. I've searched for an excellent and supportive Martial Arts school in Los Angeles for many years and am happy to say that I have found the style and school for me.The style is focused on yielding and defensive tactics coupled with clawing techniques that provide an opportunity to strike. Perfect for women who can never out muscle a larger opponent, but instead need to rely on strategy to gain an advantage. At the intermediate level you start learning weapons and forms, but nothing is taught without a complimentary practical application soon to follow. It’s a very versatile and wholistic system. The school fosters a supportive and inclusive atmosphere and is great for all types of practitioners, from the very beginners to the very advanced — as well as all types of fitness levels and abilities. There is something for everyone here. I have been attending classes for over a year and cannot be happier with what I’ve learned so far, as well as what I will continue to learn with further study.
March 30 · Amanda OvertonI’ve studied a few different styles of kung fu over the past twenty years—Northern Chinese Long Fist, Hung Gar, Bangau Putih Silat, and now Ying Jow Pai with Sifu Benson Lee and Sihing Tav Byerhoff. Of these, the Eagle Claw (YJP) training feels unique and exceptional for several reasons. The system is based on centuries-old Chinese military principles, and this particular school’s masters can be traced back several generations. There is a tremendous global community as a result of this history, making the school part of a rich international culture of martial artists. Sifu Benson Lee is an acknowledged senior disciple of Grandmaster Leung Shum, so this school is situated at the center of an impressive lineage. The daily training reflects the sense of tradition and the nuanced complexity that comes with generations of refinement. Eagle Claw develops sophisticated external/internal energetics, particularly when paired with the Wu Tai Chi training. The style has many varied components—dynamic aerial kicks as well as circular and linear straight kicks; intricate and varied hand styles and clawing techniques, including a complete system of Chin Na locks; complex footwork patterning and stances, which flow seamlessly into a series of leg sweeps and throws; numerous open hand long forms and corresponding weapons forms, many of which are tailored to, or chosen by, the individual practitioner. Given the diversity of techniques in Eagle Claw, the style is uniquely adaptable to martial artists who are coming from other styles. I’ve been able to preserve many of the techniques learned in my earlier systems, and then refine them with the control and precision that is a hallmark of Ying Jow Pai. For students new to martial arts, I can’t think of a better foundational style that Eagle Claw.Wu Tai Chi, also taught at the school, has been my primary focus, and it has proven invaluable in augmenting my kung fu with breathing and balancing techniques that promote clarity, stability, and relaxation in martial situations. The Wu system taught here includes Qi Gong practice, traditional long form movements, and advanced round form techniques as a transitional step into combat applications of the form. For those interested, the school teaches the martial components of the tai chi movements, including partner exercises designed to develop heightened feeling and sensitivity for self defense rooted in soft, internal power.Sifu Benson Lee and Sihing Tav Byerhoff are patient, sensitive instructors who are both deeply knowledgeable and capable of tailoring your practice to your range of abilities. Both instructors judge at regional and national competitions and are respected as pillars in the Chinese martial arts community—they also teach internationally as representatives of Grandmaster Leung Shum’s Ying Jow Pai tradition. The community of students feels like a group of friends who promote an inclusive, welcoming space for training at your pace and according to your desired outcomes.Personally, I feel fortunate to have found this school not long after they opened in LA--very highly recommended for beginning and advanced martial artists alike.
